It_s been called the worst environmental disaster since the BP oil spill. Utility workers have struggled to plug the 85 hundred-foot well since the breach was first discovered October 23rd. It_s estimated that more than 77 MILLION kilograms of methane gas have leaked into the atmosphere. The SoCal Gas Utility now says a relief well should be in place by no later than the end of February. Leonardo DiCaprio is lashing out at big energy companies over their corporate greed The Oscar nominee spoke out Tuesday night while being honored for his contributions to fighting climate change at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland. In his acceptance speech he accused coal oil and gas giants of covering up evidence of global warming and valuing profits above the environment. Putting his money where his mouth is the actor pledged an additional 15 million in environmental grants from his own foundation. And a terrifying prediction for the world_s oceans According to a new report from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation there will be more plastic in the sea than FISH by the year 2050. The current recycling rate for plastics is just FIVE PERCENT with an estimated 9 MILLION tons of plastics entering our waterways each year. That_s the equivalent of a one garbage truck full of plastic being dumped every minute. Kat the report says that unless we re-evaluate our attitudes towards plastic that figure COULD jump to as high as FOUR truck fulls a minute by the half century mark.Those are pretty sobering stats Angie.
