And just as millions of people hit the beach in Florida to cool off a toxic algae bloom has forced Florida Governor Rick Scott to declared a state of emergency. The foul-smelling blue-green algae has covered their water and stormed beaches in 4 counties. And believe it or not it_s a man made disaster. The algae bloom is the result of controlled discharges from the polluted Lake Okeechobee. A spokesman for the Army Corps of Engineers has explained that the environmental impact of releasing the lake water has to be balanced against the potential flooding and public safety hazard of NOT releasing it. The Florida Department of Health has said people should avoid contact with the algae with children and pets considered particularly vulnerable. Don_t go away.
