We_re starting off with an alleged billion dollar fraud scheme in New York City Prosecutors are calling it one of the largest and most brazen investment frauds ever Eila Adams joins us now with the story. Carli federal prosecutors have arrested top executives from New York-based hedge fund Platinum Partners for running a scheme that swindled investors out of nearly one billion dollars Company founder Mark Nordlicht and six others have been charged with various crimes connected to the scheme which started in 2012. Platinum quickly grew a reputation for exceptionally high returns with its largest fund paying out 17 percent annually. It seemed too good to be true and it was Court papers accuse Platinum execs of lying to clients about the value of funds they were managing and paying out favored customers ahead of others. The documents also allege that when the hedge fund started going south in 2015 Nordlicht contemplated fleeing the country. Being charged with financial negligence never looks good on a resume but doubly so when you_re the head of the International Monetary Fund IMF Chief Christine Lagarde_s future with the global organization is in jeopardy after a Paris court found her guilty in a 5-year investigation over a payout she made as French finance minister back in 2008. The surprise guilty verdict COULD have cost her a year in jail and a 13-thousand dollar fine. Instead it_s largely symbolic. IMF execs will meet in the near future to discuss her future with the agency. And China_s toxic smog problem has gone from bad to worse. Red alerts have been issued in at least 23 cities across the country this week with the government calling for the shutdown of roads and factories as well as cancelling hundreds of flights. Almost a ninth of the country is covered by the thick smog. On Monday evening in Beijing the air quality levels were slightly improved but were still EIGHT TIMES higher than the World Health Organization_s recommended maximum. That_s right Eila the German automaker has reached yet ANOTHER agreement with US authorities over its cheating scandal. The company will pay an additional one BILLION dollars to compensate VW owners who needed to bring their cars in for repairs. The payment follows a June settlement that saw VW shell out 15 billion to cover 475-thousand cars affected by the emissions scandal. In September 2015 Volkswagen admitted to installing software to cheat emission tests. Diesel models made between 2009 and 2016 emitted up to 40 TIMES the legally allowable limit The UK is considering a strict set of new rules for drone owners. Under the proposal anyone who buys a drone in the future would need to have it registered AND pass a safety test. The new laws would also bring tougher penalties for anyone who flies a drone into a no-fly zone. The drone industry is projected to be worth BILLIONS by 2025 but critics think these regulations could hinder its growth. They say it will only hurt hobbyists and won_t do anything to stop criminals or terrorists from using drones illegally. And a YouTube star is going viral for all the wrong reasons Adam Saleh claims he was kicked off a Delta flight from London to New York because he was speaking Arabic. Naturally he filmed the entire incident to share with his millions of followers. Saleh claims he was talking to his mom on the phone in Arabic when a female passenger alerted flight attendants. While some are accusing Delta of racism others aren_t so convinced. Saleh is a renowned prankster whose videos have been debunked in the past. Delta says Saleh and his friends were booted from the flight for being disruptive and shouting in the cabin. Don_t go away.

And the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is running an investigation on Fiat Chrysler pickup trucks and SUVs They have received 43 complaints of roll-aways of vehicles in park contributing to at least 25 crashes and 9 injuries Models under review are 2013 to 2016 Ram 1500s and 2014 to 2016 Dodge Durango SUVs. Isabella Rossini is in the newsroom with that story and MORE including some bombshell allegations against some of the worlds largest modelling agencies. Kat Bill Cosby is heading back to court this time to face criminal charges. A judge ruled on Tuesday that there was sufficient evidence to move forward with three charges of aggravated sexual assault. Cosby is accused in this case of having drugged and sexually touched Andrea Constand a former Temple University employee in 2004. Cosby has denied all charges but if convicted the 78-year-old comedian could face up to ten years on jail for each charge. In other legal news eight of the world_s top modeling agencies are being taken to court by former clients in a class-action lawsuit. Some of the bombshell claims against them include sex for contracts pressure to lose weight and get cosmetic surgery as well as all kinds of fake fees. If successful the lawsuit would cost the agencies over 100 million dollars and could permanently change the way the industry operates. And with the warmer weather upon us you might be thinking about running off to the local public pool for a dip. But you might want to take note folks a recent study by the CDC found that nearly EIGHTY PER CENT of public pools had at least one safety violation. And in one out of every eight pools inspected the violations were serious enough to get the facility shut down The most common problems they found were improper pH levels safety equipment issues and troubles with disinfectant So in short Kat if you_ve got a friend with a pool now_s a good time to start sucking upThat or as I_m always telling the brats in my neighborhood Go jump in a lake Thanks Isabella. Isabella 59-year-old Democratic Congressman from Philadelphia Chaka Fattah has been found guilty on 23 corruption charges including money laundering and fraud Among the crimes Fattah apparently used cash raised for an election campaign to pay off his son_s student debt. 4 of his associates were also charged. Fattah was first elected in 1994 but was in a small bit of good news for the Democrats Fattah was defeated in his primary this year and was therefore not running for re-election. With the loosening of sanctions against Iran last year it was only a matter of time before an American company closed a big deal and it looks like it_s going to be Boeing The aircraft maker announced their intentions to sell jetliners to Iran Air pending American government approval. According to various Iranian officials the contract could be for a hundred planes and be worth as much as 25 BILLION dollars If it goes through it_ll be the biggest business agreement between the two countries since the Iranian revolution in 1979. And new Federal Aviation Administration rules bring us that much closer to the age of drones delivering packages The current laws concerning COMMERCIAL use of drones require their operators to have a PILOT_S LICENCE and apply on a case-by-case basis Under the new regulations taking effect in August commercial drones can be operated by a pilot over 16 years old who_s passed a written test. Of course the rule that the drones have to stay within the pilot_s line of sight will prevent drone deliveries from being a realistic option for awhile. We_ll be right back.

But you can never outrun the long arm of the law Welcome to the newsroom everyone Yachts jets New York condos and luxury hotels - those are just a few of the things a group of well-connected financiers allegedly paid for using stolen money from the Malaysian people The US Justice Department claims the criminals stole 3.5 BILLION dollars from a Malaysian investment fund known as 1MDB. It was SUPPOSED to be used to invest in projects worldwide and return profits to Malaysian citizens. But according to US authorities the fraudsters treated the fund like their own personal bank account. And in a Hollywood twist some of the stolen money was allegedly used to fund the hit movie The Wolf of Wall Street The Justice Department hasn_t announced any criminal charges yet. Instead they_re looking to seize one billion dollars worth of assets linked to the scheme - including any profits from The Wolf of Wall Street. The Pokemon Go craze is sweeping the globe but not everyone_s crazy about it Saudi clerics have declared a Fatwa against those trying to catch them all. They_re renewing a ban against the game. The original Fatwa was declared in 2001 back when the game was played with cards. Pokemon was forbidden for promoting symbols from other religions. The new game hasn_t been officially launched in the Middle East yet but that hasn_t stopped gamers from downloading the app and spending hours hunting each and every day. Sorry comrades: Russia_s track and field team has been officially banned from the 2016 Olympic games 68 Russian athletes lost their appeal to overturn the ban imposed by the sport_s governing body the IAAF. This after it was discovered Russia had been running a state-sponsored doping program. There_s a SLIM chance the International Olympic Committee could overturn the decision. But that seems unlikely given that the IOC is currently knee-deep in a separate investigation of Russia_s widespread doping scheme. It could result in a ban of ALL Russian athletes in Rio. THAT decision comes out Sunday Kat. And with the games starting on August 5th it just adds even MORE intrigue to this ever unfolding drama. We_ll see you later Nat. It all starts with in the newsroom with details on one of the biggest health care fraud cases in American history. Here_s Isabella Rossini with a Naked News Bulletin. Kat the US Justice Department is calling it the largest takedown of its kind. 301 health care workers have been accused of trying to defraud Medicare and other federal health insurance programs to the tune of more than 900 million dollars. More than a thousand law enforcement personnel were involved in the nationwide investigation. The charges run the gamut from conspiracy to commit health care fraud to money laundering. One of the worst offenders was a Detroit clinic that billed 36 million to Medicare. It turned out to be a front for a narcotics diversion scheme. This year_s sweep breaks last year_s record of 243 suspects charged with defrauding the government of 712 million. The International Monetary Fund is urging the US to do something about its alarming rising poverty levels. One in seven Americans now live in poverty. The IMF recommends raising minimum wage rates and offering paid maternity leave to women to encourage them to join the workforce. The agency_s new report isn_t ALL bad news. Overall the American economy is in good shape. The IMF_s projection for US growth was cut to 2.2 percent from an earlier prediction of 2.4 percent but that number_s expected to rebound next year. The new and improved Panama Canal is set to open this Sunday The 5.25 billion dollar expansion is an engineering marvel that took seven years to complete. The expansion doubles the canal_s capacity and will allow even larger ships to pass through its lock gates. It_s expected to help shave 8 billion dollars a year from global maritime costs. That exceeds the emissions figure of the last time the earth was heating up this rapidly - 56 MILLION years ago. The swift changes then caused mass extinctions. If emissions continue as they are unchecked experts predict temperature increases of more than 7 DEGREES Fahrenheit within a century which could be disastrous. Lastly we have some very sad news to report about one of Canada_s most NOTORIOUS politicians Former Toronto mayor Rob Ford passed away on Tuesday after losing his battle to cancer. The 46-year-old became the butt of jokes EVERYWHERE when he admitted to smoking crack cocaine while in office. Ford eventually sought treatment for his drink and drug problems before being forced to withdraw from public life due to his illness. We_ll be right back.

A Georgia Court of Appeals has overturned the invasion of privacy conviction of _upskirter_ Brandon Lee Gary. The former grocery store employee had been convicted of taking pictures up a woman_s skirt with his cellphone camera while she shopped The court_s decision hinged on the idea that the private place referred to in the privacy law had to be a physical location not part of the body. The majority opinion condemned Gary_s behavior but said it wasn_t technically illegal. Lawmakers are already working on legislation to fix the legal loophole so enjoy it while you can pervs The toxic blue-green algae that has caused many problems in Florida has now hit the state of Utah and one of the largest fresh water lakes in the US. The 150-square-mile Utah Lake is now covered with the toxic gunk. Besides the foul smell the toxic algae causes a literal and figurative rash of health problems. Utah Poison Control reports receiving hundreds of calls with symptoms including vomiting diarrhea and headaches. While the lake itself isn_t used for drinking water the bloom has spread to the north-flowing Jordan River an irrigation source for dozens of farmers. A small silver lining for people needing to flee toxic algae: summer gas prices are lower than they_ve been in a decade Average gas prices in the US stood at 2 dollars and 18 cents a gallon on Friday with some predicting they could soon drop below the 2 dollar mark The low prices are due not just to the drop in the cost of oil but a MAJOR oversupply of gas. The US currently has 241 million barrels of gasoline stored up and waiting to go We_ll be right back.

Here she is with a Naked News BulletinWelcome to the newsroom everyone. Manhattan_s city officials recently announced that police will no longer be arresting people for some minor offences. That includes drinking in public public urination and riding between subway cars. The offences are still ILLEGAL but instead of being arrested offenders will now get a summons and fine. Traditional television viewership is continuing to drop and NETFLIX is taking a lot of the blame. A new study says that TV viewing time fell about three percent in 2015 with Netflix accounting for about half of that. Netflix now makes up about six percent of viewing hours and that_s predicted to more than double by 2020. Personally I credit House of Cards. And 2016 marks the debut of the new and improved S-A-Ts. The pre-university exam has been made more flexible since its last update in 2005. The new version puts more emphasis on actual learning and analysis and LESS emphasis on memorization of obscure vocabulary. And to the great joy of mediocre students everywhere it no longer penalizes takers for guessing. I haven_t taken the SATs ladies but I_ve heard it can be quite intimidating. A Bloomberg poll released Tuesday showed Clinton leading her presidential rival Donald Trump 49 percent to 37 percent among likely voters. The poll was carried out on Friday to Monday with the Orlando attack having little to no impact on people_s presidential preference. It_s not ALL good news for the Democrats though hackers believed to have been working for the Russian government successfully breached the computer network of the Democratic National Committee. Though it seems no financial or personal information was stolen the hackers DID have access to all emails and chat traffic in the system. They also got their hands on all the Democrats_ opposition research on Donald Trump. It_s believed that these hacks are political in nature done to advance Russia_s foreign intelligence. And former Italian prime minister and media tycoon Silvio Berlusconi underwent open heart surgery on Tuesday. The 79-year-old endured a successful four hour operation and is now in recovery. Berlusconi served as prime minister four times but has seen his power diminished following several scandals including convictions for tax fraud and bribery. Still I_m glad he_s doing better Carli. Here_s the story. Not only did the report find that psychiatric drug use was that common turns out it_s even more common among certain groups Age seems to be the biggest factor but it wasn_t the only one In terms of race white people had a usage rate of over 20 percent compared to black Hispanic and Asian adults who all had a rate below ten Women were also nearly twice as likely to be filling prescriptions as men. And get this over 80 percent of people using these medications said they had been using them for a long period of time even though most of these medications are meant for short term use. SO what_s the most popular psychiatric drug in the US? Zoloft For as long as anyone can remember Michigan has been the heart of the automotive industry so it_s no surprise they should be at the forefront of driverless technology The state recently passed a series of bills that will allow self-driving cars to be tested on public roads WITHOUT a driver...or even a steering wheel Kind of scary but the cars will still have to comply with federal safety standards and hopefully they won_t get drunk or turn on their human masters Bill Gates has long been one of the world_s biggest philanthropists and he_s at it again The tech billionaire will be spearheading the Breakthrough Energy Ventures fund which will quote finance emerging energy breakthroughs that can deliver affordable and reliable zero carbon emissions. Given that it will have over a BILLION dollars to invest and will be backed by people like Jeff Bezos and Richard Branson it just might work out We_ll be right back.

Tied nil-nil after 120 minutes the match went to a shootout. Messi fired his shot high over the net and Argentina lost 4-2 on penalties. It was the fourth time Messi_s lost in an international final and it sounds like he just can_t take any more. The 29-year old told reporters that it was his worst defeat ever and that the national team is over for him. His emotional announcement has soccer fans around the world - myself included - pleading for him to reconsider. You can probably add Tiger Woods to the list of sports heroes we_re saying goodbye to - at least for 2016. Tiger_s been struggling to recover from the back injury that_s kept him off the links for months and it_s starting to look like it_ll be another YEAR before we see him again. Tiger was in attendance at the Quicken Loans National this weekend to hand the trophy to eventual winner Billy Hurley the third. During the broadcast he let it slip that his rehab was taking longer than expected and he didn_t know if he_d make it back this year. Over to NASCAR now where Tony Stewart finally put the brakes on an 84-race winless streak In a thrilling final lap Stewart passed Denny Hamlin to emerge victorious at Sonoma Raceway in California. Hard to believe that a man who_s won 49 career Sprint Cup races HADN_T won since 2013. Tony says this is going to be his last season behind the wheel and his big win Sunday qualifies him for a shot at a potential championship run You know Tony would love nothing more than a fairytale ending. Like father NOT like son Johnny Manziel_s dad Paul has spoken out about his troubled son_s recent antics and he_s clearly fed up. The elder Manziel told ESPN his son was a druggie and that he HOPES he ends up in jail because it_d be the best place for him. Jeez tell us how you really feel pops It_s not the first time Paul_s spoken harshly about Johnny to the media. In February he told The Dallas Morning News that if Johnny didn_t get help and go to rehab he wouldn_t live to see his 24th birthday. And despite the awful reports about the conditions in Rio ahead of the summer Olympics the US rowing team is determined to compete come hell or highly-contaminated water And to do so the team is being outfitted with special new antimicrobial training suits The high-tech waterwear will supposedly keep them safe from the dangerous bugs and bacteria found in Rio_s polluted waters. This follows an incident in Avon Ohio over the weekend where Emirati businessman Ahmed al-Menhali was handcuffed at gunpoint over terrorism fears. According to statements a hotel clerk texted her family that al-Menhali had been pledging his support to ISIS and they called the police. After speaking directly to the front desk clerk police learned that in fact no statements relating to ISIS had been made. Al-Menhali has since received a public apology from Avon_s mayor and police chief. They say you shouldn_t look a gift horse in the mouth. What they don_t say is that there might be cocaine in there New Zealand police discovered 35 BRICKS of cocaine in the neck of an 881-pound horse sculpture This is the biggest ever drug haul for the country_s police force with an estimated value of over TEN MILLION dollars In connection to the crime police arrested two Mexicans and an American. And just as millions of people hit the beach in Florida to cool off a toxic algae bloom has forced Florida Governor Rick Scott to declared a state of emergency. The foul-smelling blue-green algae has covered their water and stormed beaches in 4 counties. And believe it or not it_s a man made disaster. The algae bloom is the result of controlled discharges from the polluted Lake Okeechobee. A spokesman for the Army Corps of Engineers has explained that the environmental impact of releasing the lake water has to be balanced against the potential flooding and public safety hazard of NOT releasing it. The Florida Department of Health has said people should avoid contact with the algae with children and pets considered particularly vulnerable. Don_t go away.

AT&T is still working on agreements with CBS and Showtime and features like a PVR are still in the works. As an added bonus if you_re into Taylor Swift it_s even better The company announced they_d soon be launching Taylor Swift NOW a channel devoted EXCLUSIVELY to the singer Who wouldn_t want that?? CBS is showing a lot of faith in its new reality show Hunted The series will premiere on January 22nd immediately following the NFL_s AFC championship game Based on a UK series of the same name Hunted will see nine teams of two trying to evade capture out in the real world while being hunted by professional investigators Teams that make it 28 days without being captured will receive a cool quarter million dollars But since we also need something to watch in the here and now here_s our Stream This pick of the week The Amazon series Good Girls Revolt is far from revolting and for a story set in the late Sixties it_s remarkably timely The workplace drama is based on the true story of the women who worked at Newsweek and went after the company for gender discrimination The drama gives us a world where men are the vaunted reporters and women are the lowly researchers and it_s hard not to feel like you_re watching an alternate Mad Men with a lot more Peggies The big takeaway here is that Meryl Streep_s daughter Grace Gummer who plays Nora Ephron is a revelation All ten episodes of the Amazon series Good Girls Revolt are streaming now. Donald Trump has turned his choice for running mate into a true spectacle that has voters and the media on pins and needles. Trump says he_s narrowed his choice down to four candidates but it_s believed there are two front runners: New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and Indiana Governor Mike Pence. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is another big name in the mix for the VP gig. So who will it be? No one knows just yet. Trump will make the big announcement Friday morning in Manhattan. Now to a surprising appointment in British politics. New Prime Minister Theresa May has made former journalist and London Mayor Boris Johnson the country_s top diplomat Johnson a key figure in the Brexit campaign who many expected to run for Prime Minister has been named UK Foreign Secretary. It_s a move that_s left many scratching their heads mainly because Johnson has a long history of putting his foot squarely in his mouth In April he ruffled feathers by blaming US President Barack Obama_s part-Kenyan ancestry for his dislike of the British Empire. In 2007 Johnson wrote a column describing Hillary Clinton as a quote sadistic nurse in a mental hospital. According to the BBC many stunned EU diplomats think Johnson_s appointment is a big joke. And a newly released Congressional report shows that Chinese spies hacked into the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation... and that American officials tried to cover it up New documents show the Chinese government accessed a dozen computers - including those of the agency_s top officials - between 2010 and 2013. The probe found that the FDIC hid the hacks to protect the job of Chairman Martin Gruenberg. The FDIC monitors banks that aren_t in the Federal Reserve system and hacking its servers would have exposed extremely sensitive info on more than 45-hundred banks nationwide. Pretty serious stuff. Huntsman was handed a 20 years prison sentence and fined 60 MILLION dollars. Officials say one of the buildings was 20 stories tall one was 10 and the smallest was 3 or 4. No cause has been determined but itis believed that the collapse was due to structural problems. Riois mayor said that estimating the number of casualties would be pure speculation at this point although at least 5 people were injured. Since this happened in the dead of night itis expected that the buildings would have been mostly deserted. This calamity comes as Rio is preparing for the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics.The owner of a French company that makes breast implants has been arrested amid safety concerns. Jean-Claude Mas (MASS) founder of the now-defunct company P.I.P. is being held at his home while police investigate. His company is accused of using low-grade silicone in breast implants that have a high risk of rupturing and leaking. Itis believed that up to 400-thousand women in 65 countries may have the at-risk implants. Mas apparently told police that he ordered his staff to hide the sub-par silicone from inspectors. He also claims that the silicone is perfectly safe and says that anyone filing a claim against him over the implants is simply in it for the money.Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard (GIH-lahrd) had quite a scare in Canberra (CAN-bare-ah) as she had to be literally pulled to safety by security staff. Hundreds of angry protesters had surrounded a restaurant where she was handing out medals in commemoration of Australia Day. However itis believed that opposition leader Tony Abbott not Gillard was the target of the protests. He had made disparaging comments about the Aboriginal Tent Embassy n a group of Aborigines who have lived in tents on the lawn of Parliament House for 40 years. Gillard lost a shoe in the incident but was otherwise unharmed. Timothy Geithner GITE-ner may be the US Treasury Secretary but heis not expecting to hold onto the job much longer. In a new interview with Bloomberg TV he strongly suggested his days would be numbered if President Barack Obama gets reelected. His exact words? ìIim confident heis going to have the privilege of having another Secretary of the Treasury.i That about sums it up Although Geithner has occupied the post since 2009 he nearly stepped down last August after Congress reached an agreement to raise the U.S. debt ceiling.And weill close out in the Middle East where exploratory talks between Israeli and Palestinian negotiators are officially over. The goal of the meetings n which took place over several weeks in Jordan n was to find a mutually acceptable way to set up official peace negotiations. Unfortunately both sides were unable to get past several sticking points including Israelis refusal to stop building settlements in occupied areas. Israeli and Palestinian leaders have been under mounting international pressure to resolve their ongoing territorial disputes. Weill be right back.

VS) Costa Concordia captain Francesco Schettino (skeh-TEE-no) abandoned ship half an hour before hundreds of passengers were evacuated. This according to transcripts of a conversation he had with the coastguard published by an Italian newspaper. When asked how many passengers were still on board Schettino said there were only 40. The captain then ignored orders to return to the ship and help with rescue efforts. KC) The 52-year old captain now dubbed ëCaptain Cowardi and ëThe Most Hated Man in Italyi will appear before a judge on Tuesday. The ship ran aground during what was supposed to be a friendly salute to the people on the tiny island of Giglio (ZHEE-lee-oh). The 615 million dollar vessel should have been 4 miles out to sea but was instead just 300 yards from land when it crashed. Seven people have been found dead and twenty-nine others remain missing. 2. VS) According to doctors in Venezuela president Hugo Chavez (OO-go CHAH-vehs) probably wonit live to see 2013 due to his fight with cancer. In fact the polarizing leader may not even make it to his countryis presidential election this fall The claims contradict word from Chavez himself that heis completely cancer-free since undergoing surgery in Cuba.Side CloseKC) Medical sources close to Chavez say that his prognosis is as bad as it could possibly be. Chavez himself acknowledged on his TV and radio broadcast that he was still undergoing chemotherapy. Sources have apparently said that the Cuban surgery was botched and that the cancer has spread from his colon and prostate to his bones.3. VS) Elsewhere on the international scene a part of NATOis controversial missile defense system has gone live An early-warning radar station in Turkey is now operational. The station is being manned by both Turkish and US staff. Turkey is one of five countries who have agreed to participate along with Spain Poland Portugal and Romania.KC) Meanwhile Iran n which shares a border with Turkey n is objecting to the system. Another country voicing objections is Russia. They say they want a legally binding treaty that says NATOis system wouldnit be used as a deterrent against Russia.
