Katherine Curtis has been tracking the results and joins us now for the story. KC) Eila - you_re bang on. Tuesday was definitely another big step forward for Mitt Romney. EA) So how_d he do numbers wise?KC) He pulled in almost 40 percent of the vote dwarfing the rest of the field. I know it_s still early in the process but he_s starting to get that presidential look to him.EA) I think the other candidates would have something to say about THAT Speaking of how did everyone else shape up?KC) There were definitely some surprises Eila (GO FULL SCREEN ON KAT) including the fact that the entire field has pledged to move onto the next primary in South Carolina. Welcome to the naked newsroom everyone.Mitt Romney must be feeling pretty confident today after DOMINATING the polls in New Hampshire. He took in about forty percent of vote followed by Ron Paul and Jon Huntsman who finished with a distant 23 and 17 percent respectively. After his big win Romney had a special message for President Barack Obama. Newt Gingrich Rick Santorum and Rick Perry - who received just one percent of the vote - rounded out the field. As I said earlier all six candidates have turned their attention to the next stop on the primary schedule - South Carolina on January 21. In other news today tensions are rising between Iran and Israel after the bombing death of an Iranian nuclear scientist in Tehran. Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan (mos-TAF-uh ah-MAD-ee RO-shan) was reportedly killed by a magnetic bomb that was placed on the underside of his car by an unidentified motorcyclist. Two other passengers were badly injured. It_s the latest incident in a series of similar attacks against nuclear scientists that Iran blames on covert Israeli forces. Roshan worked at one of the two sites in the country that is producing enriched uranium. And the infamous hiding spot of Osama bin Laden is set to be destroyed in spectacular fashion. Pakistani officials say they are planning a live broadcast of the destruction of bin Laden_s compound in Abottabad (ah-BOT-uh-bad). The shelter will first be hit with rocket propelled grenades before being bulldozed. The government wants to ensure the site does not become a shrine to the former Al Qaeda leader. The big event will take place next month with US and European officials also expected to attend. And that_s your first look at the news Eila i_ll send it back to you. The giant ice island split from the Pine Island Glacier in western Antarctica and is reportedly a hundred square miles which would make it about FOUR times the size of MANHATTAN This comes after another monster berg the size of Delaware split off from Antarcticas Larsen C ice shelf in July. Mitt Romney garnered the most votes from US Republican party supporters - but it was very VERY close. For the latest from the campaign trail we_ll bring in Rachelle Wilde.RW) Close is right Kat Romney may have won but it was by the SLIMMEST of margins. Just eight votesKC) That_s gotta be some kind of record.RW) It would be for a GOP presidential contest but we won_t know for sure until the certified results are released in a couple weeks.KC) So where do the other candidates stand after last night? RW) Most are onto the next primary in New Hampshire. But I doubt it_ll be the same field. Let_s go over Tuesday nightis results and we_ll get to THAT in a moment. RW) Welcome to the newsroom everyone. It was a dramatic night in Des (du ) Moines Iowa where Mitt Romney BARELY edged out Rick Santorum to win the night. As you heard the difference was a mere EIGHT votes thirty thousand and fifteen to thirty thousand and seven. That equates to about 25-percent support for both men and marks a pretty amazing turnaround for Santorum. Just a few weeks ago he was polling in the single digits. Rounding out the top three was Ron Paul who finished close behind with 21-percent of the vote. Romney was quick to congratulate his competitors after the results came in. It wasn_t a night of celebration for ALL candidates however. After a disastrous fifth place showing that saw him garner a measly ten percent of the vote Texas governor Rick Perry said he would return home to decide whether to continue his campaign. Perry_s disastrous fall from grace could be matched only by Minnesota congresswoman Michele Bachmann. She won the Ames straw poll back in August but things were far different in Iowa on Tuesday. She pulled in just 5 percent of the vote and officially threw in the towel at a press briefing Wednesday morning. And last but not least Newt Gingrich who_s dramatic sinking in the polls of late came in 4th generating thirteen percent support of the vote. In his speech afterwards he slammed Mitt Romney for running what he called a negative campaign. In other news it turns out the man arrested for the dangerous string of fires in Los Angeles is also under investigation for arson and fraud in his home country of Germany. Twenty-four year old Harry Burkhart is currently being held without bail. On Wednesday a German official said police there were investigating a suspicious fire at Burkhart_s family home near Frankfurt last October. According to authorities in LA the arson spree started the day after Burkhart_s mother was arrested for fraud charges in Germany. It_s a very strange story unfolding over there. And that_s your first look at the news Kat back to you. KAT) Very strange indeed thanks rachelle. Sounds like Harry_s in a heap of trouble. It_ll be interesting to see what other tidbits come out over the next couple days. I_d be hiding from the press for a while if I was her Good advice I_ll get to that story in a sec but first I_ve got my eye on another potential hurricane in the Atlantic His name is Nate and he could become the next hurricane to hit American soil Right now Nate is a tropical storm swirling off the Atlantic coast of Central America. But the National Hurricane Center says it will strengthen and could bring heavy rains to the Gulf Coast this weekend. On his way Nate_s expected to dump 30 inches of rain on parts of Nicaragua. No matter how you cut it Nate is NASTY The British media is calling Theresa May_s address Wednesday night the most calamitous conference speech in the nation_s history Trouble started when the PM was handed a P-45 - the British equivalent of a pink slip - by renowned comedian and prankster Simon Brodkin Brodkin_s the guy who infamously rained dollar bills down on disgraced FIFA president Sepp Blatter. And May_s problems didn_t end there She was battling a cough and it quickly turned into a LOSING battle And if THAT wasn_t bad enough the letters of the slogan on the wall behind her started falling off as she was wrapping things up. Theresa probably didn_t enjoy it but WE were VERY amused And good news people: your odds of being a millionaire are better than ever The number of millionaires worldwide has hit an all-time high. There are now 16.5 million millionaires although somehow that STILL doesn_t include me The figures are courtesy of a new a report from consultancy firm Capgemini. Two-thirds of the world_s millionaires live in the US Japan China and Germany. And overall it_s an eight percent rise from 2016. I may not HAVE a million bucks but at least I LOOK like a million bucks Don_t go away.

They say if the network doesn_t pay they_ll release whole shows to the public They_ve already leaked a substantial amount including draft scripts from five upcoming Game of Thrones episodes. Not to mention a document that seems to have the whole cast_s personal phone numbers and email addresses Little advice guys: do NOT mess with the Queen of Dragons Real estate is always a good investment... but sometimes it_s a real steal Residents of the super-upscale Presidio Terrace in San Francisco were recently shocked to learn someone had bought their street at auction Because of a series of errors the homeowners_ association failed to pay a fourteen dollar a year property tax for several decades. As if Hurricanes H and I weren_t enough now we have to worry about J and K First there_s Hurricane Jose which looks like it could be hitting the Leeward Islands still reeling from Hurricane Irma Then there_s Hurricane Katia bearing down on the Gulf Coast of Mexico As of Thursday morning it was a Category 1 but could gain strength by the time it hits land This is the first time there_ve been three hurricanes in the Atlantic at the same time since 2010 and here_s hoping it_s the last The laws of supply and demand aren_t going anywhere but price gouging in the wake of a disaster is never cool And while price gouging on some items is prohibited by law Floridians are finding out that airline tickets aren_t covered With many wanting to get out of town and swallowing up the cheap tickets prices soared and online outrage followed. For instance Florida_s citrus industry has been particularly devastated. According to officials it_s estimated that there_s a 50 to 70 percent crop loss in South Florida. He tweeted I don_t believe in instant karma but this kinda feels like it for Texas. Hopefully this will help them realize the GOP doesn_t care about them. That_s right Kat China the world_s largest commercial ivory market is aiming to shut down ivory trading within its borders by the end of this year. For decades China has been the primary destination for the world_s ivory where it_s commonly used for carvings. The ivory trade has had a devastating effect on Africa_s elephant population. Just 25 years ago there were about a million elephants in Africa. Today that number has fallen to 350-thousand. In addition to barring trade within its borders China is pledging to crack down on illegal processing sites and crime syndicates that funnel money to poachers. 2017_s off to a great start for workers in France On Sunday the French government kicked off the new year by enacting a law that bans employees from having to respond to work-related emails outside of work hours Legislators are calling it the right to disconnect. The goal is to prevent employee burnout. French officials cited studies showing that workers who checked their email throughout the day had higher stress levels than those who did not. Workers in France already had it pretty good - the country is home to a famously short 35-hour work week And if that doesn_t make you want to move to France maybe you_d prefer Finland. The country_s government has started a radical new experiment. It_s giving 2-thousand citizens a GUARANTEED income. They_ll get 587 dollars a month regardless of income wealth or employment status. Participants in the study were selected at random but had to already be receiving unemployment benefits. Finland_s welfare system is complex and expensive and the hope is that simplifying the system will actually save money in the long run. Not exactly the drama that conspiracy theorists are looking for and in fact it_s nothing new. Barreno - who was taught to read the calendars by Mayan elders - says this is actually the FIFTH time it_s happened. Looking back on the year that WAS for a moment - New York_s Marist University has conducted its annual survey to find out the most annoying word of 2011 and for the third year running the dubious winner is... (said with attitude) whatever. Whatever - made popular by the 1995 comedy Clueless - took in 38 percent of the vote in a poll of more than a thousand adults. It edged other annoying terms including like you know just saying and seriously. It_s amazing how good the cameras in smartphones are these days. But in Japan apps that allow users to take silent photos have led to a sixty percent rise in illicit photography Japanese voyeurs are taking advantage of apps that hide what users are REALLY doing by placing harmless looking email or text message displays on-screen. There were one-thousand seven hundred and forty-one incidents reported to authorities there last year. But with Google refusing to police apps on the Android Market it sounds like an issue that_s going to get worse before it gets any better. Officials are calling it an unprecedented disaster. And with more rain in the forecast it_ll likely get worse before it starts getting any better.Unfortunately that_s true. The storm is stalled over Texas and not going anywhere anytime soon. Here_s the latest. Flood waters from tropical storm Harvey have already affected a quarter of Texas_s population Harvey made landfall as a category 4 hurricane on Friday. By Sunday thousands in the Houston area were forced to seek higher ground. The situation has overwhelmed rescuers. Thing is 50 MORE inches of rain is expected in the Houston area in the coming days. Thousands of National Guard members have been called in and FEMA is openly asking for any able-bodied citizens to assist in rescue efforts. President Trump will visit Texas on Tuesday to get a first-hand look at the situation and ensure that government agencies have the resources they need to keep everyone safe. An engineer who helped develop a device that allowed Volkswagen to lie about vehicle emissions is going to jail 63-year old James Liang is the first person to be prosecuted in the global scandal. The US District Court judge wanted to send a message to the auto industry and gave him an unexpectedly harsh sentence. Liang will do more than three years in prison and face a 200-thousand dollar fine VW_s admitted to installing software in its vehicles that deceived environmental regulators about diesel emissions. The scandal has already cost the automaker 25 billion dollars in the US. And the heir to the Samsung Electronics has been convicted of bribery Samsung chairman Jay Y. Lee has been hit with a five-year prison term. It_s a case that_s gripped South Korea a country dominated by powerful family-run conglomerates. Lee was arrested in February on allegations that he_d bribed then-South Korean president Park Geun-Hye in exchange for help securing control of Samsung. The investigation of the billionaire led to Park_s eventual impeachment and she_s facing a trial for corruption. Lee_s legal team is appealing the sentence. We_ll be right back.

But her latest election win didn_t come easy In the just completed German election Chancellor Angela Merkel_s Christian Democratic Union alliance took more seats than any other party and the highest percentage of the vote. That said it was their worst result in over sixty years. The anti-immigrant nationalist party Alternative for Germany managed a third place finish. It seems like Uber may soon be driven out of London The government agency Transport for London has announced that it won_t be renewing its operating licence when it expires at the end of September. In explaining the decision Transport for London cited a quote lack of corporate responsibility. Uber will be appealing the ruling and can continue to operate until all appeal processes have been exhausted. And after Donald Trump said that NFL owners should fire players who kneel during the anthem the response was overwhelming... AGAINST HIM Commissioner Roger Goodell wrote Divisive comments like these demonstrate an unfortunate lack of respect for the NFL. Team after team released statements supporting their players. And protests became much wider spread with Pittsburgh Seattle and Tennessee opting to skip the anthems altogether We certainly haven_t heard the end of this. If not he_s going to CUT the planned 80-story skyscrpgr to just 7 stories And with the way the current real estate market in New York looks he probably shouldn_t hold his BREATH Companies that could normally afford a spot in the primo location are clamping down on spending due to fears of economic collapse in Europe. Speaking of the Big Apple readers of Travel and Leisure magazine voted New York the RUDEST city in the US (laugh) New York reclaimed it_s 2009 title from Los Angeles and the poll results show a pretty obvious trend emerging here. The bigger the city the ruder the people (laugh) Miami Washington DC LA and Boston rounded out the top five. A spokesperson for the magazine says that people who live in bigger cities aren_t necessarily RUDER they_re just more direct because they_re in a hurry. His numbers were computer generated and he says he actually bought the ticket by ACCIDENT thinking he was playing ANOTHER lottery. According to the Special Narcotics Prosecutor for New York a series of recent investigations led to the seizure of nearly 270 POUNDS worth of drugs with a street value of over 30 MILLION dollars Of that total over 140 POUNDS were pure fentanyl making it the largest seizure of that drug in New York history As their press release points out fentanyl is an opioid approximately 50 TIMES stronger than heroin and that amount could theoretically produce 32 MILLION lethal doses QUick TransSide closeThe roller coaster ride that is Bitcoin just got even scarier. It seems China is following through on its plan to get rid of all its Bitcoin exchanges. According to the Wall Street Journal the exchanges were instructed to quote unwind their operations and provide information on bank accounts used for clients_ deposits by Wednesday. Given the tight leash the Chinese government likes to keep on their economy many analysts think the clampdown could be permanent. So what makes this guy stand out?The lowlife was getting girls to send nudes by making awful threats against their families It_s a pretty disturbing story. Topping our news today the FBI has charged an American named Buster Hernandez as the man behind an online cyber campaign that terrorized young women. Using the Facebook name of Brian Kil Hernandez would message girls demanding explicit photos threatening to kill their family members or blow up their schools if they didn_t comply. Hernandez was able to remain anonymous online for years by using programs that hid his IP address. The FBI finally tracked him down by tricking him into watching a video containing a virus that tracked his address. If convicted he_ll face a minimum of 15 years behind bars Mexican soccer legend Rafael Marquez Alvarez is one of 22 people being sanctioned by the US Treasury Department for ties to drug trafficking Marquez is captain of the Mexican national team and previously played for soccer powerhouse Barcelona as well as the New York Red Bulls. He_s accused of helping launder money for notorious drug kingpin Raul Flores Hernandez. The feds are also sanctioning 43 entities south of the border including a soccer team and a casino. The sanctions freeze all US assets and ban American citizens from doing business with them. There_s no shortage of Bad Blood between Taylor Swift and former Colorado radio DJ David Mueller Swift is suing Mueller for inappropriately touching her during a photo session before a Denver concert in 2013. The pop princess is only suing for 1 dollar. She says she doesn_t want his money she wants him to serve as an example for other women who_ve been assaulted Swift claims Mueller groped her backside during the photo op. When her team brought the accusation to his bosses he launched a countersuit worth millions The trial is ongoing and Swift_s expected to testify. One thing_s for sure: when the case is closed these two are never ever EVER getting back together Don_t go away.
