That_s because record-high temperatures SOARED across North America.From the Midwest to the East coast, the US literally baked, with more then 4000 heat records being broken. Here_s the latest.42 deaths are being blamed on the heat wave with many victims being the elderly, who were stuck in homes with no air-conditioning because of recent storms. Many areas have opened cooling centers and extended hours at public pools to help beat the heat. In St. Louis, the mercury hit 107 DEGREES on Saturday, making it the tenth straight day that they_ve had triple digit temperatures.But the most astonishing report of all comes out of Reagan International Airport. That_s where a plane actually SANK into the tarmac due to the sweltering heat. Fortunately, a cold front on Sunday provided some desperately-needed relief.Drug enforcement officials in Tempe, Arizona are celebrating after dismantling a huge drug cell and arresting 20 suspects. The six-month investigation culminated in quite a haul of seized drugs and other items. They took in 3 tons of marijuana and 30 pounds of meth, along with 2-point-4 million in cash, 14 guns, cars, and even an airplane.The cell was connected with Mexico_s notorious Sinaloa Cartel. They would smuggle the drugs into Tempe, where they would be distributed from California to New York. The Sinaloa Cartel is one of the most powerful and brutal in Mexico. Their leader, Joaquin El Chapo Guzman, is worth a billion dollars, according to Forbes.With 4th of July vacations over, it_s time for Washington to get back to work, and President Obama has HIS work cut out for him. He_s re-igniting the tax debate with plans to call for a one-year extension of Bush-era tax cuts for Americans who earn under 250-thousand dollars. It_s a move that could irk people on both sides of the political spectrum.Republicans are getting ready to vote to permanently extend the tax cuts for middle and upper-income people. Some Democratic leaders are calling for the cuts to be extended for everyone who earns up to a million dollars. Obama is hoping to make his GOP opponents seem unreasonable by only asking for a one-year extension n something he hopes voters will remember come November. And that_s your first look at the news. VS) A high-ranking member of Bashar al Assad government has resigned and jumped ship to support the rebels. EA) This is your News Off The Top. 1. EA) In a video posted on YouTube late Wednesday, Syrian deputy oil minister Abdo Hussammedin (AB-doo HOOS-ah-meh-DEEN) has announced that he is defecting from the Assad regime to join anti-government forces. In the video he says that he will join those who reject injustice and the brutal campaign of the regime. VS) The 58-year old is the highest-profile political member to jump ship since conflict there began one year ago. His defection is a lone bright spot for rebel forces, who have recently suffered heavy losses and were driven out of the city of Homs (hOmz). 2. VS) And in neighboring Israel, a newspaper, citing unnamed Western intelligence sources, claims that the Obama administration offered Israel a variety of high-tech weaponry to delay an attack on Iranian nuclear facilities. According to the paper Maariv (mah-REEV), the offer was made during Benjamin Netanyahu_s highly publicized visit in Washington earlier this week.EA) Refueling planes and bunker-busting bombs were apparently on offer. Under the deal, Israel would agree to postpone any attack until 2013, well after November_s presidential election. Netanyahu has stressed that a war with Iran is not inevitable, but that he is growing short on patience with diplomatic efforts so far. 3. VS) Gadget enthusiasts have been waiting with bated breath for the latest offering from Apple - and CEO Tim Cook gave them exactly what they wanted on Wednesday. He officially unveiled the new iPad, which for now is simply named The New iPad.EA) The most notable improvement is the picture quality. In stunning HD, the 9.7 inch display screen features a mind boggling 3-point-1 million pixels. It will also have a much faster processor and a 5-megapixel camera. Apple fanboys will be able to get their hands on the new tablet when it launches in 10 countries - including the US - on March 16th. And that_s your first look at the news.VS) I know people were expecting a little more but I must say, it looks pretty impressiveEA) I KNOW, especially the picture quality. Our top story today takes us to the Gulf Coast, where Hurricane Isaac may have been downgraded to a tropical storm, but it continues to wreak havoc in Louisiana.But not ONLY Louisiana. Isaac_s effects are being felt far and wide. Victoria Sinclair and Eila Adams have been tracking the storm and join us now with all the latest. Ladies?Thanks you two. US President Barack Obama inked major disaster orders for the states of Louisiana and Mississippi as Isaac continues its slow march across the Gulf Coast. Some areas were hit with as much as 20 inches of rain, and the storm is believed to have spawned at least three tornadoes that touched down in Alabama and Mississippi. At least 840-thousand people in Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas, Alabama, and Arkansas have been left without power. Meanwhile, authorities were warning residents in small towns outside of New Orleans to leave their homes due to storm surges and flooding. National Guard troops are working around the clock to pull people out of flood waters and evacuated affected areas. An international conference in Iran turned ugly on Thursday when Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi called for an end to the violence in Syria. Speaking at the Non-Aligned Movement summit in Tehran, Morsi called the government of Syrian leader Bashar al Assad an oppressive regime that had lost its legitimacy.In response, Syrian delegates walked out in the middle of Morsi_s speech. Morsi_s words likely angered not only Syrian officials, but Iranian representatives as well. Iran is one of Syria_s few remaining close allies. The soon-to-be released book of a Navy SEAL_s account of the death of Osama bin Laden seems to contradict key details of the incident in the official report. In No Easy Day, former SEAL Matt Bissonnette says that troops saw bin Laden at the top of a darkened hallway and opened fire before determining whether or not he was armed. The White House version of events claims that the SEALs opened fire after bin Laden had retreated into a bedroom, where he may have had a weapon. Despite being released near election time, Bissonnette claims the book has no political agenda, and is instead meant to commemorate the September eleventh attacks. Hallway, bedroom - I doubt I_m alone when I say I_m just happy they got him. I totally agree but he_s getting a lot of press and for those of you interested in learning more about the book, Bissonnette will be profiled on 60 Minutes this Sunday. A joint United Nations-Arab League conference is going on right now in Baghdad, marking the first international conference hosted in Iraq in decadesRW) They_ve come a long way haven_t they. So what_s this meeting all about? VS) The one thing that_s dominated the news over the last few months, Syria and how to resolve what_s going on there. RW) No easy feat that_s for sure. VS) And it_s being made even MORE difficult because a number of explosions went off near the secure Green Zone in Baghdad as the conference kicked off. But everything seems to be going ahead as planned. Welcome to the newsroom everyone. VS) Arab leaders have gathered to discuss the UN-proposed peace plan that would bring an end to the violence in Syria. While the summit is no doubt a milestone for Iraq, expectations on what will actually be accomplished there remain low. Less than half of the 22 Arab League country leaders have shown up, with most choosing to send envoys instead. Security is so high that the location for the talks was only recently revealed to journalists. Staging the event has come at a steep price. Iraq is shelling out an estimated 500 million dollars. To Europe now, where a massive general strike has brought Spain to a standstill. Tens of thousands of workers from the country_s biggest unions protested government-proposed labour reforms. On Friday the Spanish government will unveil a plan for budget cuts it believes will help it save of billions of dollars. Spain has Europe_s highest unemployment rate, at 23 percent. And with the country tipping into its second recession since 2009, another million workers are expected to join unemployment lines this year alone. And in Colorado, a deadly wildfire has blazed its way across 4-thousand acres of land, destroying 27 homes in its path. As well, hundreds of people had to be evacuated in the Buffalo Creek region. What was supposed to be a controlled burn by the Colorado State Forest Service to reduce vegetation spiraled out of control on Monday, when high winds blew embers across a containment line. 400 firefighters from several states are working to subdue the blaze. NO) I_m NO, welcome to Naked News Our top story today is the spanking Media tycoon Rupert Murdock received by British lawmakers. This is your News Off The Top. The British committee leading the News of the World phone hacking inquiry has determined that media mogul Rupert Murdoch is quote not a fit person to exercise the stewardship of a major international company. In their scathing new report, the MP_s say that Rupert and his son James exercised a willful blindness to the corruption. The report also goes on to accuse parent company News International of trying to buy silence to make the problem go away. The committee_s ruling could see Murdoch forced to give up one of the most valuable assets in his media empire: his controlling shares in British Sky Broadcasting.Elsewhere in Europe and beyond, marches and demonstrations took place in celebration of May Day, or, as it_s more officially known, International Workers Day. Eila Adams has been following all the May Day celebrations and joins us now with the story. EA) Thank you Natasha. Thousands of people attended rallies in Greece, Spain, and Portugal to support workers rights and protest harsh austerity measures. All three countries are riddled with serious debt and unemployment problems. Fortunately, the demonstrations were mainly peaceful. Over in North America, the Occupy Movement looked to rejuvenate itself by setting up a pop-up encampment in a New York City park, as a symbolic gesture to their former stronghold on Wall Street. Things weren_t as peaceful in San Francisco, where it_s believed members of Occupy Oakland smashed store windows, and vandalized a number of automobiles.EA) And concern in Europe is growing over the alleged ill treatment of imprisoned Ukrainian opposition leader and ex-Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko. Photos of Tymoshenko recently surfaced online, showing bruises on her body that she claims were inflicted by prison guards. Tymoshenko is currently fighting a 7-year sentence handed down for abuse of office and tax evasion. EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and Justice Commissioner Viviane Reding will boycott the upcoming Euro soccer tournament in Ukraine. Five European Presidents are also boycotting a summit there scheduled for next month Natasha.NO) What_s the Ukrainian government saying about all the criticism Eila?EA) Well according to one official, Tymoshenko_s bruises were self-inflicted. The government is adamant that they haven_t laid a finger on her. NO) No surprise there. And what_s this I hear about a hunger strike?EA) That_s right. Tymoshenko_s reportedly in very poor health. She claims to have a herniated spinal disc and has stopped eating, demanding that she receive medical treatment abroad. She_s even refusing to attend her upcoming trial, which is scheduled for later this month. NO) Definitely not the kind of publicity the Ukraine wants, especially with hosting duties of a major sporting event on the horizon. Keep us up to date on how this progresses Eila. EA) Hello and welcome to Naked News, I_m Eila Adams, here_s what_s on our radar today. EA) With ten states up for grabs on Super Tuesday, Mitt Romney got JUST enough support to maintain his status as the Republican frontrunner. Romney took his home state of Massachusetts, Virginia, Alaska, Vermont, Idaho, and most importantly, edged Rick Santorum in the key swing state of Ohio. Romney can take comfort in the fact that no GOP candidate has ever won the nomination without winning Ohio. However his narrow win there over Santorum points to a concerning lack of support from the conservative base.For his part, Santorum took the states of Tennessee, North Dakota, and Oklahoma. He_s still Romney_s top challenger, but he_s not alone Newt Gingrich pulled out a desperate win in his home state of Georgia to keep his run alive. Victoria Sinclair will have a complete run down of Tuesday night_s results later in our election segment, Power Play. In other news, authorities have scored a MAJOR victory in the fight against online hacker groups, arresting some of the highest-ranking members of the infamous _Anonymous_ and _LulzSec_ collectives. And it turns out they had a little help from a source on the INSIDE. Rachel Simmons has been tracking this story and joins us now with the details. Rachel?RS) Eila five members of the notorious hacking groups were arrested in the US, UK, and Ireland on Tuesday. The big break actually came thanks to help from one of the world_s top-ranking hackers. 28-year old Hector Xavier Monsegur (HEK-tor ZAY-vyur MON-she-goor) was secretly arrested last summer in New York City and has been working with the FBI ever since. He_s referred to in court papers as the ringleader of LulzSec, and was a rockstar in the hacktivist community, working under the alias _Sabu_. The five men arrested - four LulzSec members and one from Anonymous - are facing charges in New York. They_re suspected of causing billions in damages to major banks and corporations. The FBI calls the arrests a devastating blow to the groups.SOmeone else on the wrong side of the law was once one of the wealthiest men in the US. But oh how far he_s fallen. On Tuesday Texas tycoon Allen Stanford was convicted on 7 billion dollars worth of fraud charges. Stanford was found guilty on 13 of the 14 charges he faced, which also included conspiracy, and wire and mail fraud. Using what prosecutors called an old-fashioned Ponzi scheme, Stanford spent billions of investors_ hard-earned dollars over the last 20 years to bankroll his lavish jet-setting lifestyle, as well as a number of failed business ventures. A civil suit is underway to try and recover hundreds of millions from Stanford_s global bank accounts EIla.EA) And so if Stanford_s been convicted, when can we expect sentencing?RS) The judge is expected to schedule that once the civil suit_s taken care of. We should know more in the next few days. EA) How much prison time are we potentially talking about here?RS) That really depends on the judge. For the most serious charges he_s looking at up to 20 years, but if the judge makes him serve his sentences consecutively, he may never see the light of day again. According to ZDF_s sources, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard - which supports the Assad regime in Syria and renowned terrorist group Hezbollah in Lebanon - used Iran Air and Yas Air to transport arms and explosives to Damascus and Beirut. Of course if you ask US officials, the report is nothing new. American intelligence has long accused Iran of using passenger jets to ship weapons into Lebanon. The SpaceX Dragon capsule has completed its historic mission Nine days after it launched from Cape CanAveral and docked at the International Space Station, the private vessel landed safely in the Pacific Ocean, hundreds of miles off the California coastline. Its return payload included scientific research and experimental samples. NASA is hailing the mission as an important step forward in the future of privatized space travel. The government of President Bashar Al Assad has accepted a joint UN-Arab League peace plan that calls for an end to the bloodshed there. According to the proposal, Syrian troops would hold a ceasefire and allow a two-hour daily window for rescue workers to evacuate the wounded. It_s a move that United Nations envoy Kofi Annan (KOH-fee ANN-nan) calls a strong step towards re-stabilizing the country. After 2 full days, the nuclear security summit in South Korea has wrapped up. The talks didn_t yield any specific agreements, but did help to encourage further collaboration on dealing with international nuclear issues. With the latest we_ll hand things over to Rachelle Wilde. RW) Vic, as we reported on Monday, fifty-three world leaders were gathered in Seoul to discuss cooperation in dealing with nuclear terrorism. On Tuesday they agreed that nuclear terrorism is a grave threat and that closer co-operation was needed to protect nuclear facilities, and ways of cracking down on trafficked materials. According to US President Barack Obama, the threat of a nuclear weapon falling into the wrong hands remains high.Overshadowing the two-day summit was North Korea_s refusal to back down on plans to launch a rocket they say will put a satellite in orbit. Neighboring Japan is particularly upset over the launch Vic. Back to you.VS) Well given their close proximity, I can_t really say that I blame them. RW) No, of course not. But at one point, Japan_s Prime Minister even went off script and demanded that the international community put more pressure on the North. Needless to say it was very out of character for them.VS) It_s a testy situation, hopefully they_ll change their tune this time around. I wouldn_t hold my breath though, thanks Rachelle.We_ll wrap up our first round of headlines with a look at a controversial new court ruling out of Canada. The Ontario Court of Appeals has just struck down a ban on brothels in an attempt to make prostitution safer. According to the court, sex workers are safest when working indoors, in a location under their control. Brothels were previously illegal in Canada, although prostitution itself was not. As of April twenty-fifth, prostitutes will be allowed to hire bodyguards and other staff members. Street solicitation remains criminalized, and the law against living on the avails of prostitution was amended to specifically target exploitation.

The 173-billion dollar package will help the troubled country avoid defaulting on their debts next month. This comes after the Greek government had to agree to some strict austerity measures, including huge cuts to spending, pensions, and wages.But they_re not out of the woods yet. They have to try and trim their debt to 121% of their gross domestic product by 2020. Right now, it_s at an alarming 160-percent of their GDP. RW) Elsewhere in the world, China is blaming Western countries for the bloody unrest that continues in Syria. They say that Western support of the Syrian opposition could lead to a full-scale civil war. Eila Adams has been following this story and joins us now with the latest. It_s a pretty startling accusation Eila.EA) To say the LEAST Rachelle. China went on to say that if a full-scale civil war breaks out, the west will be to blame for the inevitable intervention by foreign forces. A Chinese envoy met with Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad (bah-SHAHR ahl-ah-SAHD) and backed his plan to hold a referendum on a new constitution this weekend, which would lead to multi-party elections. Meanwhile, Western countries and the Syrian opposition say a referendum would be meaningless, as there would be no way to have a corruption-free election given the state of the country.And if the rising price of gas has you concerned then you better brace yourself, because Oil has spiked to a nine-month high. The main reason is that Iran has halted all oil exports to France and the UK. There are further rumors that Iran_s oil embargo could spread to other European countries. Prices rose to over a 105-dollars a barrel, and if the embargo extends to the rest of the EU, analysts say prices could skyrocket to 150-dollars a barrel. Iran_s Oil Minister says this is a response to sanctions imposed against hostile nations that oppose their nuclear program. The 27 countries in the EU account for nearly one-fifth of Iran_s oil exports. Back to you Rachelle.RW) So that_s the long term effect of an embargo. But how bad will this first step affect the UK and France, Eila?EA) It should be negligible, Rachelle. France gets just 3 percent of their oil from Iran - and the UK hasn_t accepted any in six months.RW) So, it_s like a shop-owner banning a customer who never shops there in the first place.EA) (chuckles) Pretty much. We_ll go now to Marina Valmont for the story. Vic, authorities in Colombia say that they_ve captured one of their most notorious crime bosses. Daniel El Loco Barrera is accused of being one of the country_s top drug lords, with ties to guerillas and other paramilitary groups. He was captured in Venezuela, and in a statement, Colombian president Juan Manuel Santos thanked Venezuelan leader Ugo Chavez for his cooperation in Barrera_s apprehension. Washington led the operation Vic, and Britain_s MI-6 intelligence agency assisted as well.So what you_re saying is that the US and Venezuela actually cooperated on something?So it would seem. They may have political differences, but when it comes to taking down the bad guys, they see eye-to-eye.Let_s hope this is a beginning, thanks Marina.Myanmar_s opposition leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, is visiting the US to receive one of America_s highest honors. She spent years under house arrest for her political activism and has been awarded the Congressional Gold Medal. It_s the US_s highest civilian honor. Past recipients include Nelson Mandela and the Dalai Lama. Suu Kyi was awarded the medal in 2008, but hasn_t been able to collect it until now. Elsewhere on the world stage, a major American organization that provides aid to other countries has been kicked out of Russia. KC has been watching this story develop and joins us now with the latest, Kat? Vic, the United States Agency for International Development announced they were shutting down operations after an order from Russian authorities. Russia is accusing the agency - which has spent 3 billion dollars in 20 years on their mission - of influencing Russian politics. President Vladimir Putin has accused theUS-funded non-governmental organizations of planning protests against his re-election. One organization that exposed voter fraud in last year_s parliamentary elections was partially funded by the American agency. They have until October 1st to close up shop in Russia.Kat, what_s the reaction been like on Capitol Hill? They can_t be happy about this.The State Department says they_re still committed to promoting democracy and human rights in Russia, BUT they won_t comment further than that. Welcome to Naked News, in our top story today a HUGE reform to US immigration policy is taking effect. As a result, countless undocumented immigrants are now seeking temporary permits to allow them to live and work in America. Long lineups have already been forming in states with big populations of undocumented immigrants, like California and Texas. The Department of Homeland Security estimates that over a million people will apply for the temporary permits, which will allow them to stay and work for two years. It_s all part of a sweeping reform introduced by President Obama earlier this year. His critics accuse him of trying to buy the Latino vote in the upcoming election.The trials and tribulations of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange continue, with a new wrinkle in his fight against extradition. Eila Adams is following this story and joins us now with a news bulletin. Vic, Assange has been granted political asylum by Ecuador. The founder of the whistleblowing website Wikileaks has been holed up in the Ecuadorian embassy in London for the past two months. He_s been fighting extradition to Sweden where he faces sexual assault charges. Ecuadorian embassy officials say they feel Assange_s human rights may be violated, and accused the UK of making an open threat to enter the embassy and arrest him. But Assange isn_t out of the woods yet. He can_t leave the embassy or he_ll be arrested, and the UK Foreign Office is threatening to strip the embassy of their diplomatic status.And in Dallas, a state of emergency has been declared, due to the West Nile Virus. There_s been an alarming outbreak of the potentially fatal disease in and around the Dallas area. So far, at least 14 people have died in Texas after contracting the virus, which is carried by birds and then transmitted to people through mosquitoes. Declaring the state of emergency will allow them to begin aerial spraying to eradicate the infected mosquitoes. In the meantime, area residents are being urged to use a lot of insecticide, and to avoid going out at dusk or dawn. We_ll be right back.

On Tuesday night he swept two critical primaries in Michigan and Arizona, but it was close Romney avoided what would have been an embarrassing defeat in Michigan, the state where he grew up. He barely edged out Rick Santorum, getting 36 percent of the vote to Santorum_s 33. But a win is a win, and Romney was quick to thank his supporters at a rally late Tuesday night.Things were a little easier for Romney in Arizona, where he beat Santorum by a 47 to 27 percent margin. Ron Paul and Newt Gingrich didn_t actively campaign in either of the two states, choosing instead to focus their attention on next week_s Super Tuesday primaries. Senior anchor Victoria Sinclair will much more from the campaign trail a little later in our Power Play segment. Elsewhere in the US, severe weather including a series of tornadoes RIPPED through a number of states late Tuesday and early Wednesday. At least 7 people have died including 3 in Harrisburg, Illinois. Hundreds of others have been injured through out Kansas, Nebraska and Missouri. And it appears that the worst may be yet to come. For more we_ll turn things over to Rachel Simmons.RS) Natasha the storms that ripped through the mid-west wreaked havoc on houses, trees, and power lines, leaving many people trapped in their homes. Kansas governor Sam Brownback declared a state of emergency for the tiny town of Harveyville, which was hit particularly hard by the violent conditions. A Canadian-born doctor based in Texas has been charged with orchestrating a scam that saw him sign up thousands of patients to healthcare programs they never really needed. Authorities say that Medicare and Medicaid have been swindled out of approximately 375 million dollars between 2006 and 2011. 54-year old Dr. Jacques Roy and six others have been charged with Roy facing up to 100 years in prison. Roy_s practice had over 11-thousand patients - more than any other in the country. The federal government has suspended payments to 78 other home health agencies while it continues its investigation, back to you Nat.NO) I_m not sure what_s more surprising Rachel- that he thought he could get away with it, or that he got away with it for as long as he did I mean how could one doctor POSSIBLY serve so many patients?RS) It_s crazy right? Apparently Roy would send recruiters to homeless shelters and get people to sign up to the scheme, giving them fifty bucks a pop. The findings contradict a previous examination that had diagnosed him as being paranoid schizophrenic. Breivik is accused of the killing of 77 people in a bombing and shooting spree that took place in and around Oslo last July. His trial is set to begin next Monday. The court will take both medical evaluations into consideration during the proceedings. The question of Breivik_s sanity will determine whether he_s sentenced to time in a psychiatric hospital, or prison. In other news today, the European Court of Human Rights has determined that five British-held terror suspects can be extradited to America to face trial, after determining that the prisoners would not be subject to ill treatment in the USA. At least one of the men has been a target of stateside authorities for years. Natasha Olenski has been following the proceedings and joins us now with a full report. Natasha?NO) Vic, the most notable of the men cleared to be extradited is radical preacher Abu Hamza (AH-boo HAM-za). He has been targeted by the US government since 1998, when he helped orchestrate the taking of sixteen hostages in Yemen. Hamza is facing 11 charges, which also include attempting to set up a jihad training camp on American soil in Oregon. Among the other high profile prisoners is Babar Ahmad (BA-bar ACH-med), a 37-year old computer expert who has been held in the UK without trial for nearly eight years. The court_s ruling will take effect in three months, but only if there are no further appeals. NO) Tensions between Iran and the US are once again on the rise over the rogue nation_s controversial nuclear program. The US has deployed a second American aircraft carrier to the Persian Gulf. It_s just the fourth time in the last decade that two carriers have patrolled Gulf waters simultaneously. According to a US Navy spokesman, the nuclear-powered USS Enterprise presence is quote routine and not specific to any threat. The Enterprise joins the Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group, and will monitor key oil shipping routes in the Gulf that Iran has previously threatened to shut down. Vic?VS) I seem to recall that the last time a US carrier left the Persian Gulf, Iran_s army chief warned that it should never come back Natasha. NO) That was in December, and evidently the American government hasn_t been deterred by his threat.VS) Well, the navy says it_s just a routine deployment, and I for one hope that_s exactly what it turns out to be. She_s got some pretty big shoes to fill Up first, however: the headlines Our top story today takes us to the skies over the eastern Atlantic, where Hurricane Leslie continues to grow stronger on its path towards Bermuda. It_s triggered emergency preparations for the island_s residents. Senior anchor Victoria Sinclair has been tracking the storm and joins us now with the latest.Eila, citizens of Bermuda have been told to prepare for the worst. Hurricane Leslie is bearing down on the tiny island and by Friday it_s expected to be a Category 2 storm. That means its winds could be upwards of 110 mile per hour. The storm is expected to continue intensifying and hit Bermuda over the weekend. Leslie could hover over the British territory for up to two days before heading north toward Newfoundland. A US federal judge has turned down an attempted block on part of Arizona_s controversial immigration law. The show me your papers provision is officially known as Section 2B, and demands that police officers check the immigration status of anyone stopped for another violation. Critics say the provision will encourage racial profiling, but US District Judge Susan R. Bolton ruled that it could not be blocked based only on speculation of profiling. Arizona is home to an estimated 360-thousand illegal immigrants. Also in the US, new data from the Department of Agriculture has some alarming news about Americans_ ability to feed themselves. We_ll go now to Peyton Priestley with more on this story.Vic, the federal numbers say that in 2011, over 50 MILLION Americans couldn_t afford to buy food for themselves at some point. Some 17 million Americans also identified themselves as having very low food security, which means they had to reduce the amount and quality of food that they ate. It also means that in at least 7 different months of the year, they didn_t have enough money to feed themselves. That_s an increase of 800-thousand people from the year before. Those numbers come just one day after another report that said nearly fifteen percent of the US population or almost 47 million Americans - received food stamps this past June. That_s an all-time high Vic.But those people receiving food stamps don_t account for everyone, do they?Thatis right. Only 57-percent of households classified as food insecure participate in those programs.Why do you think that is?I_m sure there_s a number of reasons n in many cases I think it might be pride.I think you_re right. We_re going to kick of the days_s headlines with reports of more violence in a country where the entire WORLD was hoping for peace.Here_s what_s going on in Egypt, right now. Egypt_s military has started firing missiles at suspected Islamic militants in the Sinai peninsula. Reports say that the strikes killed at least 20 people in the village of Touma. This comes on the heels of 16 Egyptian border guards being killed by suspected militants earlier this week. This marks the first time that Egypt has shot off missiles in Sinai since their 1973 war with Israel. Lawlessness has reigned in the region ever since former President Hosni Mubarak was forced to step down last year. The region that borders Egypt, Israel, and Gaza has become a haven for smugglers, and possibly a foothold for terrorists who want to attack Israel.The electronics we all use could get a lot more expensive after China slashed their production of rare earth minierals. Those are a group of 17 minerals vital to the tech industry. China has announced that they will be shutting down nearly a third of the mines and half of the smelting companies that deal with rare earths. Almost every electronic device in the world uses these minerals n almost ALL of which come from China. They say they_re imposing the restrictions both to protect the environment and to firm up the industry. Despite their name, they aren_t really all that rare, and can be found outside of China, but mining them isn_t very safe. The US, Japan, and EU are all complaining that this violates trade rules.Yet another person has been arrested after being found with weapons inside a movie theatre, this time in Cleveland. Authorities there allege that 37-year-old Scott Smith was apprehended with numerous weapons at a late-night screening of The Dark Knight Rises. He called attention to himself after arriving 30 minutes early with a large military bag. An off-duty police officer says Smith took up a tactical position at the back of the nearly-empty theatre. When he was searched, the officer found a loaded 9mm handgun, extra magazines, and several knives. A later search of his home turned up over 20 guns and thousands of rounds of ammunition. He told authorities that the guns were to protect himself and the public.Remember when the worst thing that could happen in a theatre was some jerk shining a laser pointer at the screen?Ah yes, the good ol days From now on I_m just waiting a few extra months and watching all my movies at home.We_ll be right back.

You know Rachelle, like the rest of the world I_ve been shocked by the recent rash of killings in (too-LOOZ), France.RW) Fortunately, it looks like the killer_s reign of terror could soon be over.PP) Police have tracked him down and are negotiating with him in a TENSE standoff. Here_s what we know so far. 1. RW) Since the early morning hours on Wednesday, around 300 police officers have been engaged in a tense standoff with the man believed to be responsible for the shooting of seven people. Police have surrounded an apartment in Toulouse and shots have been fired, injuring at least two officers. The suspect has been identified as Mohammed Merah (may-RAH). He_s allegedly a self-styled al-Qaeda jiHADist who spent a great deal of time in Afghanistan and Pakistan. PP) At the time of this report, there have been mixed messages about the exact nature of the situation there. At one point, certain media outlets claimed that the suspect had surrendered. However France_s interior minister later denied those reports. He said an arrest had not yet taken place, and that negotiations were ongoing. We_ll keep you posted. 2. RW) On Tuesday afternoon, a powerful 7-point-4 magnitude earthquake rocked central and southern Mexico. Hardest hit was the town of Iguala (ee-HHHOI-lah), which is close to the quakes epacenter. Around 800 homes were damaged as terrified residents fled into the streets.PP) The silver lining is that, amazingly, there were no fatalities and only 9 injuries. Also uninjured is President Obama_s daughter Malia (MAHL-ee-uh), who_s vacationing in Mexico. But the danger may not be over yet. The region has been rocked by at least 18 aftershocks. Tremors are common in Mexico, with 15 above-7 quakes registered since 1973.3. RW) This coming weekend, President Obama will tour the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea for the very first time. He_s going to be in South Korea as part of a 3-day summit on nuclear security. Officials from 54 countries - including Russia and China - will be taking part in the summit.PP) However, the meeting is being overshadowed by the North_s recent announcement that they_re planning to launch a rocket-powered satellite. The South fears it could be another step toward developing nuclear weapons, and the US says it could jeopardize their recent food-aid agreement with the North. Pyongyang (PYONG-YANG) insists it_s just part of a peaceful space program.RW) North Korea really has a knack for keeping everyone on edge don_t they.PP) Hardly a week goes by they don_t make our broadcast for ONE reason or another. VS) A new report from the UN points the finger at Iran for exporting weapons to the Syrian government, a clear violation of a ban on weapon sales. Speaking on condition of anonymity, a diplomat with knowledge of the as-yet unreleased report told reporters that three shipments of Iranian weapons - two of which bound for Syria - had been intercepted.ES) The report will be submitted to and reviewed by the United Nations Security Council, and could lead to further sanctions against Iran. Despite four rounds of sanctions since 2006, the rogue state has continued with its uranium enrichment program, maintaining that its aimed only at producing nuclear energy and not weaponry.2. VS) Meanwhile in the Hague, the long-awaited trial of alleged war criminal Ratko Mladic (RAT-ko MLAD-itch) has come to a screeching halt after just two days. The presiding judge has delayed the case because of quote significant disclosure errors by prosecutors, who failed to provide all of their evidence to Mladic_s defense team.ES) Mladic_s attorneys have requested a six-month delay, but the judge aims to have a new starting date as soon as possible. Our top story today takes us to Naples (NAY-puhls) Italy, where police have seized over 1-point-3 billion dollars in mafia assets belonging to the Camorra crime syndicate. The assets include real state, cars, bank accounts, and stock holdings. But most shocking of all is the fact that sixteen judges have been arrested for alleged collaboration with the crime family. The judges are suspected of taking bribes in exchange for financial rulings in favour of the Camorra, and one is believed to have worked as an accountant for them. So far authorities have not released any names, but 47 people have been arrested in all. Elsewhere, the international community is holding its breath with the news that a Russian oil tanker has arrived carrying a special anti-terror squad to Syria. As we well know, Syrian President Bashar al Assad has long referred to the public uprising there as a terrorist insurgency. The United Nations Security Council calls the troops_ arrival a bomb that could have devastating consequences. To learn more we_ll turn things over to Eila Adams. EA) Natasha, although Moscow has declined comment on the marines_ arrival in the port of Tartus, their presence is being interpreted as an obvious show of support for the current Syrian regime. Russia_s defense minister has denied that the troops are part of a special operations group, and instead says they are military and technical advisors. Russia has backed Kofi Annan_s (AN-an) latest UN resolution to settle the crisis. But having Russian boots on the ground in Syria makes the prospect of an armed UN intervention a very volatile proposition. EA) Further east now to Iraq, where a series of coordinated car bomb attacks in several cities marked the ninth anniversary of the invasion of US troops. 39 people were killed and 200 others suffered injuries. Authorities say the blasts were aimed at disrupting a critical upcoming Arab League Summit being held in Baghdad at the end of the month. The meeting was supposed to be held in Baghdad last year but was cancelled due to security concerns. Officials are undeterred, but also say they expect more attacks as journalists and delegates arrive in the coming days Natasha.NO) With all the commotion going on over there Eila you couldn_t blame anyone if they were to cancel.EA) Of course not. And the reason is because of THIS photo and others like it, taken nearly twenty years ago when Webb worked part-time as a model. Back when Webb started teaching in 1999, she fully disclosed her modeling past to administrators, who seemed to have no trouble with it. But now they say the photos undermine her status as a role model to students. Webb has filed a lawsuit claiming wrongful termination and sexual discrimination. This one sounds like a no-brainer An elderly British couple are lucky they aren_t going to jail after police caught them growing what has to be one of the biggest pot plants EVER in their backyard The couple had been growing and cultivating the plant, thinking it was just a regular green bush, after buying it at a local flea market south of London. The couple claims they had no idea they were growing marijuana, and apparently the cops believe them. The plant_s been confiscated and the couple won_t face charges. If you found 220 thousand dollars in cash, would you turn it over to authorities? That may be a tough one for some to answer but not Las Vegas cab driver Adam Woldemarim. The Ethiopian immigrant recently came across a laptop case in the back of his taxi and inside was a cool 220 THOUSAND dollars in cold hard cash. But rather then stash it under his mattress, Adam alerted police. The owner was eventually tracked down, and needless to say, was more than thrilled to be reunited with his money. I_m Victoria Sinclair, welcome. American authorities are one step closer to capturing those responsible for the US consulate attack in Benghazi. Libyan officials have singled out one man believed to be the leader of the group behind the assault. Eila Adams has more on this story and joins us now with the latest. Vic, according to Libyan authorities, witnesses at the scene say that Ahmed Abu Khattala was the man leading the charge. Khattala is a prominent figure of a militant group based out of Benghazi called Ansar al-Shariah. The group has many of the same puritanical and anti-western views as Al Qaeda. Libyan police have yet to bring Khattala in for questioning, however. Vic, US officials acknowledge that they_ve got their eye on Khattala, but still aren_t convinced that the attack was orchestrated by just one man.So if the Libyans are so confident of his involvement, why haven_t they brought him into custody yet?For one thing, the newly elected government there is still pretty shaky. Plus the military and police force aren_t exactly organized which makes it tough to coordinate operations. Well I_m sure if the Americans decide he_s their man, they_ll take care of things themselves, much appreciated Eila.The Libyan attack is, unfortunately, not the only terrorist activity on our radar today. A shocking story has emerged from New York City, where a suspected terrorist attempted to detonate a thousand-pound bomb in front of the Federal Reserve building in Manhattan. Luckily the FBI was able to thwart the plot. Katherine Curtis has been following this developing story. What_s the latest KatVic, a 21-year old Bangladeshi man has been arrested after attempting to blow up the building during morning rush hour. came to the US in January on a student visa. After arriving in New York City he allegedly tried to reach out to members of Al-Qaeda, but instead contacted an undercover FBI agent. The feds tracked Nafis for months, eventually supplying him with faulty explosives loaded into a cargo van. Authorities nabbed him right after he tried to detonate the bomb. Thanks for the update Kat.We_ll wrap up this first look at today_s Naked News in a Manhattan courtroom, where an Iranian man has pled guilty to plotting the assassination of a Saudi Arabian ambassador on US soil. 58-year old Manssor Arbabsiar, a used car salesman living in Texas, tried to hire an undercover DEA agent posing as a Mexican drug cartel member to carry out the attack.According to prosecutors, Arbabsiar was working under orders from the Iranian military. He offered the undercover agent one-and-a-half million dollars to carry out the hit. The plot involved bombing a Washington area restaurant as well as the embassies of Israel and Saudi Arabia. Arbabsiar_s sentencing will take place on January 23rd. His charges carry a maximum sentence of 25 years behind bars. We_ll be right back.

Although born in the Netherlands, Faber volunteered for Hitler_s infamous SS unit in his early 20s. After the Second World War, he was sentenced to life in prison for a number of high-profile war crimes. This is your News Off The Top At least 2 senior officials of the Syrian government were killed in what appears to be a suicide bombing in Damascus. The country_s defense minister and his deputy n who is also al-Assad_s brother in law n were killed instantly in the blast. Other senior officials caught in the blast were the Interior Minister and the National Security Chief. The man suspected of being the suicide bomber was actually working as a bodyguard for al-Assad_s most trusted cabinet members. This attack comes as rebels are mounting a major push in Damascus. A statement by the armed forces called the rebels delusional if they think they can twist the government_s arm by killing officials. Laszlo Csatary the number one fugitive on the Simon Wiesenthal Centre_s most wanted list, has been taken into custody in Hungary. His whereabouts were discovered by reporters from the UK tabloid The Sun. It appears that the 97-year-old had been hiding in plain sight, under his own name, for many years.Prosecutors are asking for Csatary to be placed under house arrest and his passport confiscated. He was sentenced to death in absentia in 1948 by a Czechoslovakian court for his role in sending thousands of Jews to Auschwitz. He escaped to Canada, where for decades we worked as an art dealer. He disappeared in 1997 after Canadian authorities stripped him of his citizenship. In Afghanistan, officials say that a bomb that was magnetically attached to a truck exploded, destroying 22 NATO supply vehicles. Many of the vehicles were loaded with fuel. The blast occurred at 2am, while the convoy was pulled over. Only one person was injured. The Taliban has taken responsibility for the blast, referring to NATO as invaders. Meanwhile, 10 suspected Taliban fighters were caught in a neighboring province trying to attach similar bombs to OTHER supply trucks. I_m Erica Stevens and you_ve reached Naked News. In Bulgaria, an Israeli tourist bus was the target of a suicide bomber at Burgas airport near the Black Sea. Israeli government officials say they already know who the culprit is. And if correct, there could be massive repercussions on the international scene. Eila Adams has been tracking the story and joins us now with the details. What_s going on Eila? Erica, 7 people were killed and 34 others were injured in the blast. Israel has sent in medical aircrews to bring the victims home. The Bulgarian government says the attack was carried out by a man with false US documents. According to Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak, Lebanese terrorist group Hezbollah is responsible for the incident, in a plot backed by Iran. Barak says the bombing is eerily similar to other recent strikes on Israeli targets in Thailand, India, and Kenya. In an ominous statement late Wednesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Israel will quote respond forcefully to Iranian terror. Meanwhile the US government is urging its citizens to exercise extra caution while traveling abroad. The State Department has issued a warning for potential dangers in Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. American travelers are warned to be careful using public transportation, particularly on ferries and other maritime vessels. That likely has something to do with recent pirate attacks in Yemen, Algeria, and Somalia. Other potential targets include high-profile sporting events, hotels, and restaurants. U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia sat down with CNN_s Piers Morgan for an exclusive interview. Naturally, the ruling on Obamacare came up n Scalia voted against it, but his usually conservative colleague John Roberts was the swing vote in upholding the controversial law. But Scalia had Roberts and his fellow justices backs, saying he was OFFENDED by criticism on how they ruled. He also downplayed reports that tensions ran high during the deliberation process, saying so-called sources that leaked information didn_t have all the facts. He didn_t discuss any current cases before the court but mentioned some past decisions n like his belief that Roe V Wade should be overturned. I don_t agree but whatever and did he say anything about the big Bush V Gore decision that gave Bush the presidency in 2000?He sure did and he had 3 words for Morgan and the rest of us. ìGet over itiThat Scalia, he doesn_t mince words does he Well, I guess it HAS been 12 years. The fate of Obamacare lay in the hands of the nine high court judges, and their ruling will impact the lives of millions of Americans for years to come. For the full report on the court_s landmark decision, we_ll turn things over to senior anchor Victoria Sinclair. VS) Thank you Eila. In what will go down as one of the biggest legal rulings in US history, the Supreme Court has upheld every single component of President Obamais health care law. In a narrow 5-4 ruling, the justices deemed Obamacare is in fact constitutional, despite the protest of many critics that accused the legislation of overreaching its authority. The deciding vote went to John Roberts, the Bush-appointed Chief Justice who traditionally rules along conservative lines. The Supreme Court decision has far-reaching implications, given that the law extends health coverage to over 30 million uninsured Americans. It also requires nearly all residents to purchase insurance or face stiff penalties. When originally passed two years ago, Obamacare marked the first major upheaval in the US health system in 60 years. Although a major victory for the President, the issue hasn_t entirely been put to bed. Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus REINSE PREE-bus has already gone on the attack, saying a Romney victory in November will give the GOP sufficient authority to defeat the law. On the international front, Turkey has responded to Syriais recent aggression by deploying troops along their shared border in Turkeyis Hatay (hah-TY) province. Officials says the deployment is a response to Syria shooting down of a Turkish fighter jet last week. They_ve also deployed heavy weaponry including rocket launchers and anti aircraft missiles. Meanwhile, Syriais Information Minister has reportedly claimed that the shooting down of the jet was actually just a case of mistaken identity n he says they may have thought it was an Israeli aircraft Eila.EA) Thatis just mind-boggling if you ask me. How could they possibly make that call from the ground?VS) The minister claims that jets from Turkey and Israel ìlook alikei. How they look different than any OTHER jet is beyond me.EA) And how is that explanation any BETTER?VS) Obviously itis not. PP) And so when can we expect peace talks to start?EA) I wouldn_t hold my breath on that one, the military hostages may have been released, but there are still others being held captive, so all_s definitely not forgiven Welcome to the newsroom everyone.EA) As I was saying, Colombia_s Farc rebels have freed the last of their ten police and military hostages. The men had been held in a guerilla base camp in the dense jungle for twelve to fourteen years. After being freed, they were flown to safety via military helicopter and are in surprisingly good health, all things considered. While their release is cause for celebration in Colombia, the country_s president, Juan Manuel Santos, says it_s not enough to end the decades-long conflict. In a brief national address, Santos called for an end to Farc_s _ tactics, and demanded the release of all hostages. It_s believed the guerilla group still has over 100 civilian prisoners. The US government has placed a massive bounty on the head of one of the world_s most-wanted men. Uncle Sam is offering a ten million dollar reward for information leading to the arrest of Hafiz Mohammad Saeed (ha-FEEZ mo-HAHM-ed sy-EED), the alleged mastermind behind the deadly 2008 attacks in Mumbai. Saeed is also suspected of being the founder of Lashkar-e Taiba (LASH-kar ee TY-buh), the Pakistani terrorist organization that some call the next Al-Qaeda. Syeed roams and operates freely in Pakistan, and the American bounty will only heighten tensions between the US and Pakistani government. We_ll wrap up this first look at the news with a big congratulations to college basketball_s Kentucky Wildcats They clinched the men_s NCAA (N-C-double-A) championship Monday night with a 67-59 victory over Kansas.
