Our coverage today begins in the US, where in the wake of the tragedy in Newtown Connecticut, there is an increasing call for a national conversation on gun control. President Barack Obama has already pledged to make the issue a priority during his second term in office. Now, a growing number of US senators are showing support for a crackdown on firearms. With more we_ll turn things over to Eila Adams.Thank you Vic, and yes, a number of prominent pro-gun politicians have asked for a new discussion on gun control. Senators Mark Warner and Joe Manchin, both A rating members of the National Rifle Association, have changed their stances on the issue. Manchin says it_s time to quote move beyond rhetoric on gun control. Even Nevada_s Harry Reid, who_s one of the NRA_s highest-ranking political allies, has hinted at changing his stance. President Barack Obama will no doubt need their support. On Monday he met with key cabinet members in Washington to discuss how gun laws might be changed. QUICK TURN TO TV.So the tide is definitely turning VicI think that_s the right move Eila. So what kind of proposals should we expect from these government officials?Well at the very least, Democrats will be pushing to reinstate the assault weapons ban that was repealed in 2004. In other words, guns that can fire many bullets before needing to be reloaded. On the other hand, some politicians have been outspoken about arming teachers and principals as a way to better protect schools. It_s a complex problem that will surely require a complex solution. And what does the NRA have to say about all this? Oddly enough Vic, they_ve gone silent. Traditionally, the organization has been vocal in its support of gun rights following shooting incidents. But they_ve taken down their Facebook page, and have yet to issue any sort of statement.That_s probably a smart move right now. Anyway, many thanks for the update Eila. Rachelle Wilde joins us now with a look at some of the other headlines we_re tracking today. Rachelle? Vic, Syrian Vice President Farouk Al-Sharaa has publicly stated his belief that the army of Bashar al-Assad will not be able to defeat the country_s rebel forces. The surprising admission, made to a Lebanese newspaper, comes as opposition troops close in on the Syrian capital. Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has announced that he_s engaged - to a woman almost 50 years his junior The 76-year old is planning to marry 28-year old Francesca Pascale. The ex-PM has also hinted at making another run at public office in Italy_s next election. And the US computer hacker accused of breaking into the email accounts of some of Hollywood_s biggest stars has been given a 10 year jail sentence 35-year old Christopher Chaney of Jacksonville, Florida, admitted to gaining unauthorized access to the accounts of Scarlett Johansson, Christina Aguilera, and Mila Kunis, to name a few. During sentencing, a Los Angeles judge said Chaney_s actions were as serious as physical stalking. We_ll be right back.

That_s how the daughter of Google Executive Chairman, Eric Schmidt, is describing her recent visit to North Korea with her father. On her blog, Sophie Schmidt says her group had to leave their cellphones and laptops behind. Most of the events they attended felt staged, and they had to be careful about what they said, because everything was bugged. Google Sophie in North Korea to read more on her blog.Subway has responded to viral criticism that their famous footlong sandwiches aren_t actually 12 inches. The company says the term is a trademark and descriptive name, not a measurement of length. And a married Utah woman is lucky to be alive after a giant boulder rolled down a nearby ridge and crashed through her house. 63-year old Wanda Danhalter was in bed when the massive rock slammed into her bedroom in the middle of the night. Our coverage today begins in the US where ten banks have struck a massive settlement with federal regulators, for wrongfully foreclosing on millions of homeowners in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis. While the mortgage-abuse agreement should benefit many citizens nationwide, some still feel that the banks may have gotten the better end of the deal. There_s lots to cover so let_s turn things over to Eila Adams with all the details. What_s going on Eila.EA) Vic, 8.5 billion dollars - that_s the amount Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, and a handful of other financial institutions will pay to settle charges on a number of mortgage violations. 3.3 billion of that figure will go to homeowners, and END reviews of controversial foreclosures. The other 5.2 billion will be put towards mortgage bills and the outstanding principal on home sales. An estimated 400-thousand homeowners will be eligible for restitution payments.And in a separate deal, Bank of America has agreed to pay 10.3 billion to US government mortgage agency Fannie Mae. The money is compensation for mortgage-backed investments that went bad during the housing crash. 3.6 billion will go directly to Fannie Mae, with Bank of America buying back around 30-thousand loans worth 6.75 billion dollars.EA) Despite the huge sums being paid out, Vic, consumer advocates aren_t happy about this deal.VS) And why exactly is that Eila? EA) Well, if you take the 3.3 billion being paid out directly to home owners and divvy it up, it works out to around 865 dollars per person. VS) It_s not exactly a proper reimbursement for losing your home, is it? EA) Not at all. On top of that, critics call the settlement a get out of jail free card. Rather than having each of the foreclosures looked at individually by investigators, they all just get swept away. VS) Like it or not, a review that_s been going on for the better part of two years comes to a close. Thanks for the insight Eila.

I_m Katherine Curtis, you_re watching Naked News. Well, as predicted, the weather battered states of New York and New Jersey were hit with yet ANOTHER storm. This is the last thing they needed after the devastation caused by hurricane Sandy only a few days ago. And like its predecessor, this latest nor_easter has done its fair share of damage. 60-mile-per-hour winds have brought down trees and power lines, blacking out tens of thousands of more homes across the region. In addition to a number of evacuations, hundreds of flights in and out of both states were cancelled, leaving thousands of travelers stranded. To date, nearly 100 thousand people have registered for emergency housing assistance n a number that_s expected to increase in the coming days. An analysis of the US presidential vote tally has shed some light on exactly how Barack Obama handily won Tuesday_s election. Though his margin of victory in the popular vote was slim, Obama scored major victories in some key demographics. With more here_s Eila Adams. Kat, president Obama proved to be the candidate of choice for women, latinos, African americans and younger voters. Obama garnered 55-percent of the female vote, compared to just 44-percent for Mitt Romney. His support among the Latino and African American community was even more impressive, where he scored 71-percent and 93-percent of votes, respectively. And once again, his support among younger voters helped put him over the top. 60-percent of voters between the ages of 18 and 29 submitted ballots for Obama, Kat.Sounds to me like the Republican party has some major work to do. So where did most of ROMNEY_S support come from?Well, he DID get most of the white vote Kat, the problem is, that_s a shrinking demographic and not enough of them showed up at the polls. 72% versus 74% in 2008. Yeah, that IS a problem, it_s surprising because just over a week ago it seemed like the Romney campaign had all the momentum. What happened?Well that depends on who you ask. But in terms of demographics, as I said, Romney simply wasn_t able to compete in several key groups: specifically African-Americans, Hispanics, and the largest of all, women. In fact, Romney trailed Obama with SINGLE women by a staggering 38 percent, a statistic due in no small part to the Republican party_s heightened focus on issues like contraception and abortion. Other complaints from conservative strategists include Paul Ryan_s inability to vitalize the ticket, and Hurricane Sandy_s domination of the news cycle in the final days of the campaign. Some salacious new details of alleged impropriety are emerging about General John Allen, the leader of operations in Afghanistan. Yet the White House is standing firmly behind Allen. Here_s Victoria Sinclair with the latest. Vic?Marina, President Obama has expressed his support of General John Allen, the nominee as NATO_s Supreme Allied Commander in Europe. White House spokesperson Jay Carney says that Obama has faith in Allen, and that he_s very happy with his record of service. This comes as allegations continue of inappropriate email contact with Jill Kelley, one of the women at the heart of the scandal surrounding disgraced former CIA Director David Petraeus. While some sources refer to the emails as innocuous but flirty, Fox News is citing sources that compare the messages as being closer to, quote, phone sex over email.iFrance is now the first Western country to recognize Syria_s combined opposition as the only true voice of the Syrian people. While the US and UK have acknowledged support for the coalition, they_ve yet to recognize them as a government in exile. But French President Francois Hollande made his country_s stance official at a televised news conference in Paris. He called the coalition quote, ìthe future government of a democratic Syria, allowing it to bring an end to Bashar al-Assad_s regime.A student from Saudi Arabia has been sentenced to life in prison for plotting to attack the home of former US President George W Bush. Khalid Aldawsari was arrested last year after the FBI raided his apartment, finding bomb-making materials. His list of targets also included hydroelectric dams and nuclear power plants. Experts say he had obtained enough ingredients to construct a bomb similar to the ones used in the 2005 attacks on the London subway system. Aldawsari_s lawyers unsuccessfully argued that while he definitely had intent, he hadn_t made any significant progress into carrying out his plans. And that_s your first look at the headlines. Authorities in Mexico have located the wreckage of a plane believed to have been carrying popular Mexican-American musician and TV personality Jenni Rivera. Six other people are thought to have been on board the aircraft, which lost contact with air traffic controllers while passing over the northern state of Nuevo Leon early Sunday morning. An American serviceman has been killed during a dramatic rescue operation in Afghanistan_s Sarobi district. The unnamed special operative played a role in the freeing of Dr. Dilip Joseph, a U.S. citizen who_d been kidnapped by Taliban forces earlier last week. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said the dangerous mission was necessary, as Dr. Joseph_s life was in imminent danger.Mere weeks after declaring himself cancer free, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has announced he_s returning to Cuba for additional surgery. During a speech to supporters, the 58-year-old announced that should he become incapacitated, Vice-President Nicolas Maduro would take over the country_s top leadership responsibilities. In Cairo, protestors are gearing up for a massive rally against Egyptian leader Mohamed Morsi. Slated for Tuesday, the demonstration will place further pressure on the president, who_s refusing to delay an upcoming vote on the country_s constitution. Critics of the proposed document say it lacks objectivity and doesn_t fully represent the needs of the Egyptian people. Laura, is there any chance the protest might cause Morsi to hold off on pushing through with the constitution? It_s possible. The recent round of demonstrations DID cause the president to back-peddle on those sweeping powers he recently gave himself. I guess we_ll see how this one develops this week, thanks Laura. There_s been a rather shocking announcement from this yearis World Economic Forum in Davos Switzerland. The Green Growth Action Alliance, which was established at last yearis forum, told political and business leaders that a whopping 14 TRILLION dollars must be spent on clean energy to prevent global warming from devastating the world economy.VS) Eila, that_s quite the number and i_m sure it surprised everyone at the forum.EA) That it did Vic and it came from quite the powerful source.Heading the alliance is former Mexican President Felipe Calderon, and heis not mincing words on the subject. Calderon says to prevent global warming from reaching its tipping point, the international community must take massive and immediate action. His recommendations focus on weaning off fossil fuels and shifting all industry to low-carbon technology.And yes, this comes with a serious price tag: an estimated 700 billion dollars a year between now and 2030. That said, Calderon is adamant that IN-action will cost our planet far more in the long run, since it would ravage both the environment AND the world economy. EA) One thing_s for sure Vic, itis definitely a BOLD initiativeVS) Was there any sense where all that money would come from?EA) Well, according to Alliance members, it would take a combination of public money and private investments to get the job done. But they firmly believe the goal can be reached if key members of the G20 get on board.VS) One thing_s for sure Eila, SOMETHING needs to happen so we_ll see if any of these recommendations stick. Thanks for the update.VS) Now here_s Laura Connor with more news making headlines today.LC) Vic, the Pentagon has cleared the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan from any wrongdoing in his link to the David Petraeus sex scandal. Sources say the Defense Departmentis investigation has concluded that General John Allen did not act inappropriately during his extensive e-mail communications with socialite Jill Kelley. The votes have been tallied in the Israeli general election, and despite losing a number of seats, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahuis Likud-Beitenu coalition will remain in power. Meanwhile, the ultra-nationalist Jewish Home party made significant gains, running on a platform that would deny Palestinian independence. North Korea is defiant in the face of a UN Security Council resolution condemning their successful December rocket launch. The rogue state says it plans to continue to strengthen its nuclear program. The UN resolution was passed unanimously by the Security Council, and promises significant action in the event of another rocket test. VS) Thanks Laura. And so the Mayor challenged the twitter user to a contest. Microsoft_s new Surface tablet is sure to be a hot seller this holiday season. Just ask Microsoft product endorser Oprah, who tweeted that she_d already bought 12 of them as gifts There_s just one problem though - she tweeted that message from... her IPAD The Big O_s big gaffe is a big black eye to Microsoft. They_ve spent 1.5 BILLION to market the Surface, and it doesn_t sound like they_re getting a very good return on their investment. Fox News anchor Brian Kilmeade is in hot water once again for sexist on-air comments. During a recent radio broadcast, Kilmeade told a caller that the network picked its female talent out of Victoria_s Secret catalogues. Kilmeades comments triggered major backlash on Twitter. With the country_s civil war death toll already topping 60-thousand, Assad made it clear that the violence would continue as long as there was even one so-called terrorist left in Syria. Eila?EA) Kat, in his first major speech in more than six months, Syrian leader Bashar al Assad was greeted by cheers and applause at the Damascus Opera House. The President vowed to keep fighting Syrian rebel forces, whom he referred to as murderous criminals. Assad offered up a peace plan that included a reconciliation conference, new elections, and a revised constitution. He spoke out against Western nations that have been supporting and funding opposition soldiers, calling them Western puppets.EA) Kat, Assad also cryptically added that his regime would quote negotiate with the master, not with the slave. KC) It_s unfortunate Eila, but this struggle is clearly nowhere near over. So how has the international community responded to the speech?EA) As you can imagine, it hasn_t been very friendly. The US State Department says that Assad is detached from reality. And the European Union is sticking by its guns, and claiming that Assad must step aside and allow for political transition. KC) Is there any chance this can be resolved with Assad staying in office?EA) It doesn_t look like it. The Syrian National Coalition - the group officially recognized by the US and EU - says they_ll accept nothing less than the President_s resignation. KC) And the beat goes on. Thanks very much Eila.
