The 52-year old took the oath at a midday ceremony administered by former US President Bill Clinton. De Blasio succeeds Michael Bloomberg for the top job at City Hall. He won November_s mayoral election in a landslide, winning more than 70-percent of votes. He_s promised to bridge the city_s deepening economic divide.And finally, hospitals and medical clinics across the US are bracing for administrative issues because Obamacare officially came into effect on Wednesday. More than 2 million people have now been enrolled under President Obama_s Affordable Care Act. That figure is far short of original government projections, thanks mainly to problems with the HealthCare.gov website. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services had 10-thousand agents on call to help deal with enrollment problems ahead of the January 1st deadline.

Apple Watch is slated for release early next year. While most of the excitement surrounded the new devices, we should also mention one more innovation: Apple Pay. The company is trying to make wallets obsolete by keeping all credit and debit card information right there in your iPhone. Several major retailers have already signed on.A new NBCWall Street Journal poll shows that more Americans believe the US should become more active in foreign affairs. The majority of those surveyed - 40 percent - still want the US to mind its own business on the world stage. BUT, 27 percent say they want to see more decisive action. That_s a significant jump from the last poll in April, when just 19-percent wanted the same thing. Could we be nearing the end of the global war on drugs? A coalition of former world leaders gathered in New York this week to discuss new international drug policies, including the legalization of psychoactive substances such as marijuana. The commission, which consists of 21 former presidents and other influential people, wants to put an emphasis on giving drug users access to proper health care. They believe that softening drug laws will give governments a leg up on international cartels. The United Nations is warning that acidity levels in the earth_s oceans are rising at an alarming rate. This is due to record-high levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Acidity can have a serious impact on marine life, affecting creatures right up the food chain. The study found that atmospheric carbon dioxide levels were 42 percent higher in 2013 than they were in the pre-industrial era. Scientists say the rise in acidity is unprecedented in the last 300 million years. And Harvard University_s School of Public Health has just received the largest donation in the institution_s history - three hundred and fifty million dollars The money comes from the Morningside Foundation, established by the family of the late T.H. Chan. It will be used towards initiatives including financial aid, new classrooms, and research. It will also lead to the renaming of the School, which will be called the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

The plan includes closing certain tax loopholes exploited by the nation_s top earners, and increasing the capital gains tax. The proposal would raise an estimated 320 billion dollars over the next decade - funds that would be put towards middle class economic growth, such as child tax credits. Of course, the President_s plan will face stiff opposition from Republicans, who are now in control of both the House and Senate. A shocking new Oxfam study has shed light on the explosion in financial inequality worldwide. The international agency says that at current rates, the planet_s richest 1-percent will own more than the other 99-percent COMBINED by next year. They found that the richest 80 people have the same wealth as the planet_s poorest 3.5 BILLION people. The charity is calling on world leaders to take tougher stances on corporate interests. The report is expected to be a key talking point as politicians gather for this week_s World Economic Forum in Davos Switzerland. And Indonesian investigators have now confirmed that the crash of AirAsia flight 8501 was NOT due to terrorism. It was the first public statement from officials since analyzing the data on the plane_s cockpit voice recorder. The most likely cause of the December 28 crash still appears to be bad weather. Investigators said the pilot seemed to be too busy trying to regain control of the aircraft to send out a distress signal. I_m Katherine Curtis, don_t go away.
