Well it finally happened China has overtaken the US as the world_s largest economy The International Monetary Fund says China_s economy is now worth 17.6 trillion dollars with the US trailing JUST behind at 17.4 trillion. The speed at which China caught up to the US is staggering. In 2005 the Asian nation_s economy was less than HALF that of the US. But it_s not ALL bad news for the US economy. New figures from the US Congressional Budget Office show that the country_s federal deficit fell dramatically in 2014 The deficit is the difference between what the government spends and how much money it takes in. With the fiscal year ending September 30th the deficit was roughly 486 billion dollars. Compare that to a high of 1.4 TRILLION in 2009. It_s actually the fifth straight year that the deficit number has dropped. The CBO attributes that to higher taxes smarter government spending and an economy that_s on the mend.And the White House says the new and improved HealthCare.gov website is ready to take on record amounts of web traffic expected next month. That_s when people will be able to enroll in private insurance programs for 2015. Officials are confident that when the three month signup period begins on November 15th there won_t be any embarrassing bugs or glitches like there were last time. The site_s highest day for traffic came on March 31st when it saw a record 4.8 million visitors.

O_Toole says that with five million people in the District of Massachusetts selecting jury members and staging a fair trial should not be an issue. A landmark agreement has been reached between the US government and America_s largest Indian tribe. The Obama administration has agreed to pay the Navajo Nation 554 million dollars for mishandling funds and natural resources owned by the tribe. The government leases some 14 million acres of land from the Navajo for farming logging and mining. When the settlement is signed on Friday in Arizona it will be the largest settlement with a tribe in American history. And pretty soon wasting food in Seattle will cost you A new law just passed that will see households and businesses fined for not separating food from their garbage Starting next July households will be charged a dollar for trash bins containing more than 10-percent food waste. Businesses and apartment buildings will be fined fifty dollars Seattle_s now the second American city to adopt the policy - after San Francisco - which is aimed at getting people to do more composting.

Yeah KIND of a big deal. The latest estimates from the World Health Organization say that within the next two months we could be seeing ten thousand NEW cases of Ebola EVERY WEEK. I_m not saying that to cause a panic I_m saying it to show that the spread of the virus needs to be taken seriously and that it_s a problem that isn_t going away anytime soon.And that_s where Dr. Snyderman comes in. She was part of the NBC team in Liberia whose camera man - Ashoka Mukpo - contracted the deadly virus. Fortunately Mukpo is on the road to recovery in Nebraska. The rest of the NBC team volunteered for a three-week quarantine in New Jersey. But the voluntary quarantine turned mandatory last week when Snyderman VIOLATED her isolation agreement. The dumb doctor was spotted with two other members of her quarantined crew picking up food at a nearby restaurant Hey Nancy: ever hear of delivery? You_d THINK a medical professional of all people might understand and respect the reasons for being in quarantine. But nope not this quack. She had to literally endanger the lives of MILLIONS of people and for what? Soup and a grilled cheese sandwich? And here_s the best part: Snyderman wrote a half-assed APOLOGY letter saying she was sorry if she scared anyone but and I quote: As a health professional I know that we have no symptoms and pose no risk to the public. In other words: sorry I_m not sorry. And REALLY? You KNOW you pose no risk to the public even though symptoms can take up to THREE WEEKS to appear? We sincerely hope the doctor and her crew are free of symptoms as they say they are and that this whole mess is forgotten in a couple weeks. But unfortunately upon further examination it looks like Nancy Snyderman has come down with a SERIOUS case of Boob of the Week. Then again what do I know? Unlike Nancy I_M not a doctor

The city of Phoenix was hit with its heaviest single-day rainfall since 1933. According to the National Weather Service more than six inches of rain in under 24 hours In the city and its surrounding neighborhoods roads were flooded and schools were closed along with other official buildings including the Arizona House of Representatives. Conditions were especially bad in western Phoenix where some cars were left completely submerged on the highway. The downpours are a byproduct of Tropical Storm Norbert which has now been downgraded to a tropical depression. Despite the downgrade Isabella the harsh weather could continue for the next couple days.The White House has strongly condemned violence against women in the wake of a newly released video showing NFL player Ray Rice punching his fiancee in an elevator. A spokesman for the administration said President Obama believes that violence against women is something that needs to be aggressively combated. Rice initially received a two game suspension for the incident which occurred at an Atlantic City casino in February. But new footage showing what went on INSIDE the elevator has resulted in his indefinite ban from pro football. The NFL meanwhile is facing tough questions about whether or not it saw the video during its investigation. The league claims that local authorities did not make the footage available to its officials. However casino workers have told TMZ that the NFL never bothered to ask for the tape. The revelations have raised suspicions of a possible coverup with many calling for commissioner Roger Goodell to step down.Home Depot has confirmed that hackers have cracked its security systems and gained access to 40 million credit and debit cards Not only that but the fraudsters have had access to Home Depot_s servers for about FIVE MONTHS. If caught with small amounts of the drug citizens would face a small fine rather than jail time. Nutter says he isn_t condoning marijuana use but too many people were being given criminal charges for carrying tiny amounts of the drug. The new law could save the city_s police department 4 million dollars a year and help some 4000 citizens avoid being arrested.Those GE appliances in your kitchen have just turned Swedish On Monday Sweden_s Electrolux bought out General Electric_s appliance wing for 3.3 billion dollars. Electrolux has always sold well in Europe but has seen its sales in North America stagnate. The company hopes that acquiring the GE brand will give it a leg up against rival Whirlpool Corp.

Disgraced former CBC radio personality and one time host of the syndicated show Q Jian Ghomeshi has been arrested and charged with FOUR counts of sexual assault. Ghomeshi surrendered to police on Wednesday in Toronto after almost a month of allegations that he physically and sexually assaulted several women. The arrest comes a day after Ghomeshi dropped a 55 MILLION dollar wrongful termination lawsuit against the CBC.And Bill Cosby has had two more shows canceled due to widespread allegations of sexual assault. The 77-year old comedian_s upcoming dates in Washington and Connecticut have been postponed indefinitely. In the past few weeks more than a dozen women have come out to claim Cosby assaulted them. The allegations had already caused NBC to cancel plans for a new Cosby TV show and Netflix to drop a standup special that would have started streaming this week.

And for taking the time to deliver that message Joe Swift was FIRED That_s right he was FIRED-after TWENTY years at the station. KNOP TV bosses apparently felt Swift gave the impression that Moore and McConnell were forced out of their job. And so they forced Swift out of HIS job I don_t know WHAT broadcast those bigwigs were watching but there wasn_t an OUNCE of deception or bitterness in what Swift said. Maybe if his former bosses weren_t so preoccupied with how THEY came off in a message that had NOTHING to do with them they would have seen thatSwift told a local North Platte newspaper that he was NEVER told he couldn_t say goodbye to Moore and McConnell and that they did that sort of thing on-air all the time. He feels like he got fired for being a nice guy - and I don_t blame him. But what REALLY grinds my gears about this story is exactly HOW Swift was canned-over a Skype call... on his wife_s birthday That is some cold-blooded stuff right there folks. More then a FEW people were displeased that the stormtrooper was BLACKFirst off let_s skip over the very distinct possibility that this guy isn_t an actual stormtrooper and is an infiltrator in a uniform. We_ll assume he is in fact a full-on stormtrooper. What exactly would be the problem with him being black? If anyone_s answer is just well it_s just wrong then they fall under the racist umbrella and their boobery is self-evident.But if their answer is there are no black stormtroopers because they_re all clones of Jango Fett and Jango Fett wasn_t *white* but he_s not BLACK well that_s just wrong Allow me to give a Kat Curtis-approved correction.Yes stormtroopers were at one time clones. But that had CHANGED between the events of the Phantom Menace and A New Hope Chancellor Palpatine opened the ranks to recruits and conscripts. Remember?It_s entirely likely that there_s a veritable rainbow under those stormtrooper uniforms. After all the humanoid characters in the Star Wars universe aren_t really differentiated by what we modern earthlings call race. A long time ago in a galaxy far far away a human was a human. So no there_s no real reason a stormtrooper couldn_t be black. Or Asian. And anyone who says otherwise is our Boob of the Week

It_s when a US company merges with a firm in another country to reap the benefits of lower tax rates. A recent example would be the Burger King-Tim Hortons partnership which saw the burger chain move its head offices to Canada to dodge higher tax rates in the US. Inverted companies often use hopscotch loans which send money from offshore branches back to parent companies in the US while avoiding tax penalties. Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew says the new measures will reduce the economic advantages of inversions and will hopefully eliminate them altogether.The iconic American family that made its fortune in oil is shifting its focus to CLEAN ENRGY The heirs to the Rockefeller estate say they_re selling off all their investments in fossil fuels. The Rockefeller Brothers Fund has joined a coalition of philanthropists aiming to divest themselves of 50 billion dollars_ worth of oil assets. The announcement came just a few hours before the start of the UN climate change summit in New York. Rockefeller fund director Stephen Heintz said he believes the move honors the vision of John D Rockefeller. And speaking of climate change new data shows that last year the world discharged MORE carbon pollution than EVER before. Led by China the US and India the planet pumped out nearly 40 billion tons of carbon dioxide - 778 million more than the year before. The results were compiled by the Global Carbon Project. They say that at this pace global temperatures will rise by two degrees fahrenheit in the next thirty years. At the 2009 climate summit in Copenhagen world leaders agreed that number was dangerous and pledged to not let it happen.

Obama has pledged to hunt down militants and their assets wherever they may be. In that same interview on Meet The press President Obama also stated that the US needs to do more in the fight against Ebola. He acknowledged that the deadly outbreak in West Africa could eventually become a threat to Americans. He said the US and other world powers need to send equipment health supplies and medical professionals to the region to keep the virus from spreading. Last week the United Nations estimated that 600 million dollars was needed in the region to help prevent further spread of the disease.It was a star-studded affair in New York_s Upper East Side Kat as hundreds of mourners gathered to say their final goodbyes to Rivers. She passed away last week at the age of 81 due to complications during surgery. Whoopi Goldberg Diane Sawyer Hugh Jackman and Howard Stern were among the big names attending the funeral. At least five hundred spectators lined the streets outside. The ceremony was described as a joyful event that felt like a Broadway show. It was packed with humor tears and fittingly it ended with a standing ovation. Now to a bizarre story from the world of sports. Another NBA team is up for sale over racist remarks. This time it_s the Atlanta Hawks. Owner Bruce Levenson is selling his controlling stake in the team over a 2012 email disparaging the team_s African American fans. Levenson who was a vocal critic of Donald Sterling during the LA Clippers fiasco voluntarily reported himself to the NBA head office. Negotiations for the team will begin soon and in the meantime Hawks CEO Steve Koonin will take over for Levenson. NO will have more sports coverage coming up a little later. Finally today Nicaraguan officials say a mysterious late-night blast in the country_s capital was likely caused by a meteorite. At around 11pm local time on Saturday night a loud bang rocked the city of Managua leaving behind a forty foot-wide crater. Scientists have not yet found any traces of a meteorite but say seismic sensors registered activity at the time of the event. Thankfully the blast occurred in an area where it posed no danger to locals.

The White House has requested Miller_s immediate pardon and release. Miller is now the second American sent to work in a North Korean labor camp along with Kenneth Bae. A third US citizen Jeffrey Fowle is awaiting trial. The battle continues between firefighters and another raging wildfire in heatwave-stricken California. The Silverado Fire as it_s being called started Friday morning in the Cleveland National Forest located southeast of Los Angeles. The blaze has forced hundreds of people from their homes and has burned through more than 16-hundred acres of forest. More than one thousand firefighters are working around the clock to slow the fire_s progress. Officials say they_re at 20-percent containment and are confident that number will start rising quickly. Meanwhile further south in Mexico Hurricane Odile has made landfall in Baja California. Residents and tourists alike are seeking shelter as the Category three storm rolls through the area. Several flights to and from the peninsula have been cancelled and coastal areas are being evacuated. Mexican authorities have prepared shelters for as many as THIRTY thousand people.And a new Miss America has been crowned And for the THIRD year in a row Miss New York took home the title. Kira Kazantsev kept the Empire State_s run going thanks to a rather interesting talent. The Manhattan blonde of Russian descent sang Pharrell Williams_ Happy while seated and banging a red plastic cup on the floor a la Anna Kendrick.

In California thousands of acres of forest have been destroyed by fires and thousands of people have been forced to flee their homes. The worst of the 11 wildfires is the Courtney Fire which has burned through 320 acres just east of Yosemite. Close to 11 hundred residents there had to be evacuated due to the flames. A little further north some eight hundred firefighters are battling the King Fire in El Dorado County. Close to four thousand acres have been charred with hundreds of people evacuated. Officials say THAT blaze is only ten percent contained and spreading quickly. Meanwhile the threat of the Silverado Fire which was burning southeast of Los Angeles appears to have subsided. Authorities have lifted an evacuation order that forced hundreds to leave the area. Years of drought across California coupled with their current heat wave is turning this year_s wildfire season -into the most destructive on record.And with no end to the heatwave in sight officials expect a rough go of it over the next few weeks. Speaking of warm weather new data from NASA shows that this past August was the hottest since record keeping began in 1881 Climatologists say that individual months don_t necessarily indicate climate change and that the key issue is looking at longer-term trends. May of this year also broke warmth records.Apple has shattered records with its upcoming iPhone 6 models Four million pre-orders were logged on the very first day the phones were made available - that_s DOUBLE the number of iPhone 5 pre-orders from two years ago. Based on the early numbers analysts estimate Apple could sell up to ten million phones during its opening sales weekend. The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are being released this Friday. Over on Wall Street excitement is building for the year_s most anticipated debut - and possibly the world_s largest-EVER IPO I_m talking of course about Chinese e-commerce powerhouse Alibaba Group Holding Limited. The company has seen such strong demand from investors that it_s raised the price range on its IPO from the mid sixties to around 70 dollars per share. Needless to say investors are clamoring to get their hands on this stockUS President Barack Obama awarded the Medal of Honor to a pair of Vietnam veterans one living and one who passed away. The first was Donald Sloat who sacrificed himself by jumping on a grenade to save the rest of his platoon from harm. Sloat_s brother accepted the medal on his behalf. Meanwhile 80-year old Bennie Adkins also received the honor. President Obama said Adkins_ performed too many heroic acts to count during his time in Vietnam. One of them involved loading injured soldiers onto a helicopter while taking on enemy fire. Australian authorities have thwarted what they say was a terror plot organized by members of the Islamic State or ISIS. Police claim it was the biggest counter-terrorism operation in the country_s history. Early Thursday morning more than eight hundred officers took part in two dozen searches across Sydney. Plus China and India have signed a LANDMARK dealThe US congress has given their approval for President Barack Obama_s plan to arm and train Syrian rebels. The 273 to 156 vote came after days of debate with leaders ultimately agreeing that the threat posed by ISIS to the US was too great to ignore. The support however does NOT extend to committing ground troops in the region. In Africa people affected by the growing Ebola outbreak are turning to the black market. According to the World Health Organization desperate patients are purchasing blood from survivors of the virus. The blood is believed to contain antibodies that can combat the deadly disease. This hasn_t been proven to work but with no approved Ebola drugs currently available infected people think it_s a risk worth taking.And China has signed a number of LANDMARK deals with India to ensure peace between the two Asian nations. One of the agreements will see the Chinese government investing 20 BILLION dollars in India_s infrastructure over a five-year period. They also include upgrades to India_s aging railway system increased trade co-operation and a proposed settlement of the common border shared by the two countries. Firefighters are being deployed in the THOUSANDS to try and put out the blazes. The largest wildfire located east of Sacramento has torched almost 28 thousand acres. Sadly THAT reboot would be without Kiefer Sutherland who_s said he_s too old to play the role anymore. Following in the footsteps of FXX_s Simpsons Marathon VH1 Classic is set to run a Saturday Night Live marathon. It_s SNL_s 40th anniversary so the network is going to air The SNL Rewind: 2015 to 1975. That_s four hundred and thirty three hours of episodes back to back beginning with Season 39 on January 28th and finishing up on February 15 with the premiere episode. That_ll be followed by a three-hour SNL anniversary special. That_s a LOT of SNLFX has announced that Louis CK_s Louie will start it_s 8-episode fifth season on April 9th. And its lead-in is going to be Billy Crystal_s new series The Comedians. That show looks kind of like a cross between any mismatched partners sitcom and The Larry Sanders Show as Crystal plays a hugely successful veteran comic who_s forced to pair up with a young edgy comedian for a latenight sketch comedy show. Like Louie it_s apparently both uncomfortable and hilarious.Amazon has made a huge change in how show PILOTS will get picked up for a series or not. They_ve launched 13 pilots on their website which can be viewed for free. And they_re asking viewers to provide feedback on which of them should be given full seasons. On traditional TV with limited airtime available on each network less than a quarter of pilots ever make it to air.
