We_re going to kick of the days_s headlines with reports of more violence in a country where the entire WORLD was hoping for peace.Here_s what_s going on in Egypt, right now. Egypt_s military has started firing missiles at suspected Islamic militants in the Sinai peninsula. Reports say that the strikes killed at least 20 people in the village of Touma. This comes on the heels of 16 Egyptian border guards being killed by suspected militants earlier this week. This marks the first time that Egypt has shot off missiles in Sinai since their 1973 war with Israel. Lawlessness has reigned in the region ever since former President Hosni Mubarak was forced to step down last year. The region that borders Egypt, Israel, and Gaza has become a haven for smugglers, and possibly a foothold for terrorists who want to attack Israel.The electronics we all use could get a lot more expensive after China slashed their production of rare earth minierals. Those are a group of 17 minerals vital to the tech industry. China has announced that they will be shutting down nearly a third of the mines and half of the smelting companies that deal with rare earths. Almost every electronic device in the world uses these minerals n almost ALL of which come from China. They say they_re imposing the restrictions both to protect the environment and to firm up the industry. Despite their name, they aren_t really all that rare, and can be found outside of China, but mining them isn_t very safe. The US, Japan, and EU are all complaining that this violates trade rules.Yet another person has been arrested after being found with weapons inside a movie theatre, this time in Cleveland. Authorities there allege that 37-year-old Scott Smith was apprehended with numerous weapons at a late-night screening of The Dark Knight Rises. He called attention to himself after arriving 30 minutes early with a large military bag. An off-duty police officer says Smith took up a tactical position at the back of the nearly-empty theatre. When he was searched, the officer found a loaded 9mm handgun, extra magazines, and several knives. A later search of his home turned up over 20 guns and thousands of rounds of ammunition. You know Rachelle, like the rest of the world I_ve been shocked by the recent rash of killings in (too-LOOZ), France.RW) Fortunately, it looks like the killer_s reign of terror could soon be over.PP) Police have tracked him down and are negotiating with him in a TENSE standoff. Here_s what we know so far. 1. RW) Since the early morning hours on Wednesday, around 300 police officers have been engaged in a tense standoff with the man believed to be responsible for the shooting of seven people. Police have surrounded an apartment in Toulouse and shots have been fired, injuring at least two officers. The suspect has been identified as Mohammed Merah (may-RAH). He_s allegedly a self-styled al-Qaeda jiHADist who spent a great deal of time in Afghanistan and Pakistan. PP) At the time of this report, there have been mixed messages about the exact nature of the situation there. At one point, certain media outlets claimed that the suspect had surrendered. However France_s interior minister later denied those reports. He said an arrest had not yet taken place, and that negotiations were ongoing. We_ll keep you posted. 2. RW) On Tuesday afternoon, a powerful 7-point-4 magnitude earthquake rocked central and southern Mexico. Hardest hit was the town of Iguala (ee-HHHOI-lah), which is close to the quakes epacenter. Around 800 homes were damaged as terrified residents fled into the streets.PP) The silver lining is that, amazingly, there were no fatalities and only 9 injuries. Also uninjured is President Obama_s daughter Malia (MAHL-ee-uh), who_s vacationing in Mexico. But the danger may not be over yet. The region has been rocked by at least 18 aftershocks. Tremors are common in Mexico, with 15 above-7 quakes registered since 1973.3. RW) This coming weekend, President Obama will tour the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea for the very first time. He_s going to be in South Korea as part of a 3-day summit on nuclear security. Officials from 54 countries - including Russia and China - will be taking part in the summit.PP) However, the meeting is being overshadowed by the North_s recent announcement that they_re planning to launch a rocket-powered satellite. The South fears it could be another step toward developing nuclear weapons, and the US says it could jeopardize their recent food-aid agreement with the North. Most notably with the big news coming out of the UN.VS) That_s right. Details on a confidential UN report concerning the situation in Syria have gone public.ES) And the document claims that the Syrian government has been getting help from another not-so-popular player on the global scene.VS) Here_s the story. 1. VS) A new report from the UN points the finger at Iran for exporting weapons to the Syrian government, a clear violation of a ban on weapon sales. Speaking on condition of anonymity, a diplomat with knowledge of the as-yet unreleased report told reporters that three shipments of Iranian weapons - two of which bound for Syria - had been intercepted.ES) The report will be submitted to and reviewed by the United Nations Security Council, and could lead to further sanctions against Iran. Despite four rounds of sanctions since 2006, the rogue state has continued with its uranium enrichment program, maintaining that its aimed only at producing nuclear energy and not weaponry.2. VS) Meanwhile in the Hague, the long-awaited trial of alleged war criminal Ratko Mladic (RAT-ko MLAD-itch) has come to a screeching halt after just two days. The presiding judge has delayed the case because of quote significant disclosure errors by prosecutors, who failed to provide all of their evidence to Mladic_s defense team.ES) Mladic_s attorneys have requested a six-month delay, but the judge aims to have a new starting date as soon as possible. The 70-year old former general of the Bosnian Serb army stands accused of leading Europe_s worst massacre since the Second World War. 3. VS) The April fundraising tally is out, and the Obama campaign along with the democratic party, managed to raise a hefty 43.6 million dollars. Although somewhat surprisingly, that number is down nearly 10 million from the previous month. ES) Meanwhile, Mitt Romney has some reasons to celebrate of his own. The presumed Republican candidate pulled in a healthy 40 million dollars last month - over three times the amount raised in March. That figure includes money generated for Romney_s 2012 campaign, as well as the _Romney Victory Fund,_ which is a joint fundraising effort with the Republican National Committee. Our top story today takes us to Naples (NAY-puhls) Italy, where police have seized over 1-point-3 billion dollars in mafia assets belonging to the Camorra crime syndicate. The assets include real state, cars, bank accounts, and stock holdings. But most shocking of all is the fact that sixteen judges have been arrested for alleged collaboration with the crime family. The judges are suspected of taking bribes in exchange for financial rulings in favour of the Camorra, and one is believed to have worked as an accountant for them. So far authorities have not released any names, but 47 people have been arrested in all. Elsewhere, the international community is holding its breath with the news that a Russian oil tanker has arrived carrying a special anti-terror squad to Syria. As we well know, Syrian President Bashar al Assad has long referred to the public uprising there as a terrorist insurgency. The United Nations Security Council calls the troops_ arrival a bomb that could have devastating consequences. To learn more we_ll turn things over to Eila Adams. EA) Natasha, although Moscow has declined comment on the marines_ arrival in the port of Tartus, their presence is being interpreted as an obvious show of support for the current Syrian regime. Russia_s defense minister has denied that the troops are part of a special operations group, and instead says they are military and technical advisors. Russia has backed Kofi Annan_s (AN-an) latest UN resolution to settle the crisis. But having Russian boots on the ground in Syria makes the prospect of an armed UN intervention a very volatile proposition. EA) Further east now to Iraq, where a series of coordinated car bomb attacks in several cities marked the ninth anniversary of the invasion of US troops. 39 people were killed and 200 others suffered injuries. Authorities say the blasts were aimed at disrupting a critical upcoming Arab League Summit being held in Baghdad at the end of the month. The meeting was supposed to be held in Baghdad last year but was cancelled due to security concerns. Officials are undeterred, but also say they expect more attacks as journalists and delegates arrive in the coming days Natasha.NO) With all the commotion going on over there Eila you couldn_t blame anyone if they were to cancel.EA) Of course not. It happened recently on the canadian side when he climbed over a safety barrier and jumped. The 180-foot fall should have meant certain death. Instead, rescue workers were stunned to find that he_d survived and waded to shore. He was airlifted to hospital with non life threatening injuries. If you live in New Zealand and smoke, watch out The government there is adamant about getting you to butt out. Yeah, well it sucked compared to this one. A man in rural Tennessee has spent the last eleven years building this ten-storey monstrosity. Horace Burgess says he began work on the ten-thousand square foot behemoth after God told him to build it in a daydream. And so he did, spending 12-thousand dollars on materials in the process. But youive got to admit, the finished product is very impressive. Itis got a basketball court, spiral staircases, and countless balconies.
