The Pakistani government has re-opened key supply routes to NATO-led forces in Afghanistan. And they did it because they finally got the apology they were looking for from the US regarding the accidental killing of 24 Pakistani troops last November. US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton offered her condolences in a telephone call with Pakistan_s Foreign Minister. Over the seven months since the incident, relations between the two countries have become increasingly frosty.Seven-thousand truckloads of US equipment was left stranded. The American government in turn held hundreds of millions of dollars in aid money intended for Pakistan, and canceled purchases of Pakistani oil. All_s forgiven now, however. And the re-opening of the supply routes is a hugely important step as NATO troops prepare to leave Afghanistan by 2014. Elsewhere in the region, devastating flooding in northeast India has killed at least 95 people and left over 2 million others homeless. Natasha Olenski has been surveying the damage and joins us now with the latest. Peyton, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh says the floods are the worst in recent times. More than 2-thousand villages have been affected by the rising water levels, the byproduct of a week of monsoon rains. Emergency workers are using helicopters and speedboats to save stranded citizens from danger zones and drop off food and first aid supplies. The Indian government is putting 90 million dollars towards recovery efforts. Fortunately, the water has started to recede, and the focus will soon shift to rebuilding all the damaged infrastructure.Meanwhile in the US, the JetBlue pilot who had an infamous meltdown during a flight from Las Vegas to New York has been found not guilty by reason of insanity. A Texas judge concluded that Clayton F. Osbon is dealing with a severe mental disease or defect. During the March 27th flight, Osbon left the cockpit to yell at terrified passengers about terrorists and religion. The pilot will be sent to a psychiatric facility for further evaluation, and will have his next day in court on or before August sixth. Back to you Peyton.Thanks Nat. It_s scary to think that a man in his state of health was in charge of a plane full of people. So what exactly happens on August sixth?Basically the judge will review the results of Osbon_s mental evaluation and decide whether he should be released or admitted to a mental ward. He was there to sign a new agreement between the two countries as well as make an important speach to the american pubic from Bagram (BAG-rum) Air Base. Eila Adams has this breaking story as well as other news making headlines today.EA) Rachelle, President Obama pulled a fast one, and showed up unannounced in Afghanistan. Just about everyone was stunned, including the military and the media. It was all part of his master plan though because he was there to announced a new agreement between the two countries.He committed to pulling 23-thousand troops out of the country by the end of this summer. He also claims that he would stick to the deadline of turning security completely over to the Afghan government by 2014. Obama insisted the US would not be building permanent bases or patrolling the country. This is his third visit to Afghanistan since taking office, and it coincides with the 1-year anniversary of the death of Osama bin Laden.A Bosnian immigrant has been convicted of plotting to bomb the New York subway system. Adis Medunjanin (ah-DEES meh-doo-jah-NEEN) was recruited by al Qaeda to perform the suicide mission with two co-conspirators. Unfortunately for him, the 2 other men testified against him, revealing just how close they were to pulling the plot off. They apparently targeted the subway because it represented the heart of everything in New York City. It took less than 2 days for a jury to find him guilty of numerous terror charges, including conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction. Medunjanin faces life in prison when he_s sentenced on September 7th. In another bombing plot - this one home-grown - 5 men were arrested for planning to blow up a Cleveland-area bridge. The FBI caught the men - some of whom are self-described anarchists - in a sting operation. They say that nobody was ever in any danger, since the C4 the plotters bought was inert and controlled by an undercover agent. The group also allegedly conspired to topple financial institution signs on top of high rise buildings. It all started with over 300 Police surrounding the home of an Al-Qaeda trained militant accused of the shooting deaths of seven people in Toulouse (too-LOOZ). Victoria Sinclair_s been following the latest developments and joins us now with the latest. VS) Hi Eila. Everyone can breathe a sigh of relief. After 32 hours, the siege of the five-story apartment building of Mohammed Merah (may-RAH) is finally over.EA) That_s VERY good news, but from what I understand, he did not go quietly.VS) Unfortunately that_s true as well. He told authorities he wanted to die with a weapon in his hands, and it looks like he got what he asked for. Here_s what we know right now. VS) Following stalled negotiations and hours of silence between the two sides, French police stormed the apartment of Mohammed Merah at 11:30 am local time Thursday. According to police reports, the 23-year old gunman emerged from the bathroom in a blaze of gunfire and jumped out the window, firing as he fell to his death. Two officers were wounded in the exchange. Earlier, Merah told negotiators that the killings were to avenge the deaths of Palestinian children, as well as France_s military presence in Afghanistan. Australian police are celebrating the capture of THAT country_s most-wanted fugitive. 38-year-old Malcolm Naden (NAY-din) had been on the run since being accused of murder back in 2005. A master outdoorsman, Naden repeatedly managed to elude authorities. But on Thursday police surrounded a campsite in New South Wales and finally got their man. He_s now been charged with murder, the attempted murder of a police officer during a previous manhunt, and two counts of indecent aggravated assault A disturbing scene is unfolding in the African nation of Mali (MA-lee). Rebel forces have appeared on state radio and TV, announcing that they have overthrown the government and assumed command of the country. This just hours after an assault on the presidential palace of Amadou Toumani Toure (ah-mah-DOO too-mah-NEE TOO-RAY). Sources say a number of government ministers have been arrested. The soldiers, who call themselves the Committee for the Re-establishment of Democracy and the Restoration of the State, issued a nationwide curfew and claimed that the country_s constitution had been suspended. Eila, President Toure has yet to release an official statement and his whereabouts at this time are unknown. That_s your first look at the news, back to you. We_ll start off in Mexico, where results from the national election have lead to a series of protests. Although Institutional Revolutionary Party candidate Enrique PeÒa Nieto became the presumed president-elect, his main opponent has so far refused to concede. Supporters of the Democratic Revolution Party_s Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador took to the streets, echoing his belief that the election had been, quote, plagued by irregularities. Their protests have included blockades and sit-ins throughout the country. This is in spite of the fact several exit polls found PeÒa Nieto to have clinched the presidency. Official results aren_t expected until Wednesday. The U.S. has deployed wide-scale military reinforcements to the Persian Gulf. The move is a preemptive decision geared at deterring Iranian forces from shutting down the Strait of Hormuz HORE-mooz, which has become a hub of activity in recent months. With more on this story, let_s check in with guest anchor Laura. Eila, in addition to monitoring the Strait_s shipping routes, the US is increasing its number of fighter jets in the region, should the standoff over Iran_s nuclear program escalate. The US Navy is also beefing up its presence in Gulf waters, doubling the number of minesweepers in the area. This comes as the U.S. and its allies have begun strictly enforcing their embargo on Iranian oil exports. Speaking under condition of anonymity a US military official didn_t mince words, saying the message to Iran was Don_t even think about sending your boats out to harass our vessels or commercial shipping. We_ll put them on the bottom of the Gulf. That_s a pretty bold statement Eila. It is, but it seems like the US isn_t messing around this time. I guess we_ll see how Iran responds.Well, the ball is definitely in their court but if history is any indication, they won_t take that type of threat lightly. We_ll keep everyone posted on the developments, thanks Laura. Let_s shift our gaze over to the eastern United States now, where record temperatures and violent storms have left millions of residents without power. Maryland, Washington DC, Ohio, Virginia and West Virginia all declared states of emergency, after hurricane-force winds lead to blackouts and extensive property damage. To make matters worse, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has confirmed over two thousand record temperatures were either matched or broken since June 25th. Power companies have warned it may take several days before electricity is completely restored. And unfortunately, there doesn_t seem to be any end to the searing heat in the near future. Hi Marina, one man is dead and another injured in a shooting as newly-elected Quebec Premier Pauline Marois was giving her victory speech. The suspect then allegedly tried to set a fire before he was apprehended. As he was being taken into custody, he reportedly yelled out The English Are Awakening.Marois was unharmed, and returned later to deliver her speech. Police are so far unable to determine if she was, in fact, a target. Marois is the province_s first female premier, and the leader of the separatist Parti Quebecois. During her victory speech, she pledged ìWe want a country. And we will have it.iIn other news, Mexican marines have captured the reputed head of one of the most notorious drug cartels in the country. Mario Cardenas Guillen, AKA El Gordo, has reportedly run the Gulf Cartel since his brother, former leader Antonio Cardenas - was killed in a 2010 gunfight with government forces.Cardenas looked subdued as officials read a statement detailing his apprehension. One official claimed that when he was caught, he had weapons, ammunition, a large sum of cash, and what appeared to be cocaine. In Asia, Japanese media are reporting that the country has reached a deal to buy a disputed chain of islands in the East China Sea. The deal, worth 26-million dollars, would see Japan purchase the 5 islands and 3 reefs from their private owner, who currently rents them to Japan. But not everybody in the region is happy about this development. China and Taiwan also claim they have ownership of these islands. The whole situation caused a serious diplomatic standoff in 2010, when a Chinese fishing vessel collided with Japanese Coast Guard patrol boats. The fishermen were taken into Japanese custody for several days before being released. China says theyire monitoring the situation closely, and vowed to protect their sovereignty.I_d like to see a list of things that Japan and China DONiT have tensions over.They DO seem to have a lot of on-going issues between them don_t they. Natasha?NO) Youire absolutely right, Eila. Itis a truly sad day n weive lost one of the best.EA) He left behind a staggering body of work.NO) That he did. In fact in nearly 40 years on the program, he worked on around 800 investigative reports.EA) Mind boggling. What more can you tell us Vic?NO) Eila, the 93-year-old had been in declining health over the past few years, and underwent triple-bypass surgery in 2008. Prior to that, he was considered one of the most trusted names in journalism n and one of the most feared if you had something to hide. He was one of the original anchors on the groundbreaking news magazine show ì60 Minutesi. He remained a fixture until stepping down from a full-time position in 2006, although he continued to file the occasional report. Among his most memorable interviews were Martin Luther King, Yassar Arafat, and Iranis late Ayatollah Khomeni koh-MAY-nee). He will be missed.North Korea is continuing plans for its controversial rocket launch. The military has now moved the rocket into place. According to officials in Pyongyang (PYONG-YAHNG), the rocket will simply be launching a satellite into orbit. However, many feel that this is a disguised long-range missile test. And according to South Korean intelligence, it wonit end there. They suggest that theyill use the international uproar over the launch as an excuse to perform ANOTHER nuclear test. They claim to have satellite images that prove the North is preparing for a test at the same site where they carried out previous tests in 2006 and 2009.Things are not looking good for the proposed cease-fire in Syria. The rebels have rejected government demands for a written guarantee that they will disarm. The Free Syrian Army says that since they donit recognize the current government, they wouldnit give any such guarantee. This comes on the eve of a cease-fire brokered by the UN and Arab League. Now the Syrian military says they donit want the rebels to exploit their proposed troop withdrawal and re-organize. Back to you, Eila.EA) So Nat, when will we know if this proposal works or not.NO) Well, the cease-fire, if it DOES happen n is scheduled for Tuesday. But Iim not optimistic.EA) Itis a shame. A very ominous warning regarding the shaky situation in Syria Vic.That_s putting it lightly Laura. Here_s the latest.Former Syrian ambassador to Iraq, Nawaf al-Fares, says the Assad regime will use chemical weapons if cornered. In fact, the top defector says there are unconfirmed reports that chemical weapons have already been used in the city of Homs. Syria is believed to have a large arsenal of chemical weaponry, and there is widespread concern over the future of these weapons should the regime be overthrown.The former ambassador also claims that the Syrian government is colluding with al-Qaeda. He alleges that Assad green-lit mass-casualty bombings on his own citizens, with the help of the infamous terrorist organization. al-Fares_s comments come as Damascus is embroiled in some of its fiercest fighting to date. In other news today, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has some disheartening news for farmers in the US. The country is in the midst of its worst drought since 1956. More than half of the US is dealing with the dangerous desertlike conditions, and more than three-quarters of the country is abnormally dry. Soybean and corn crops have been hardest hit. As of last week, nearly a third of corn crops planted in high-production regions were in poor to very poor condition, according to agriculture officials. The month of June was the fourteenth hottest and tenth driest since N-O-A-A records began. A US Senate probe into the inner workings of HSBC has revealed that poor security standards at Europe_s largest bank left it vulnerable to illegal money laundering. The Senate report claims that huge amounts of Mexican drug money and suspicious funds from Iran, Syria, and the Cayman Islands passed through the bank.The report also concludes that US banking regulators failed to properly monitor the British bank. The findings are the result of a year-long inquiry and review of over a million HSBC documents. The bank_s executives are expected to apologize at a Senate hearing on Tuesday.Sounds like they_ve got a LOT of explaining to do Vic.You think? PP) U.S. Secretary of State Hilary Clinton says that Russia is sending attack helicopters to Syria. The shipment isn_t bound for the rebels either - they_re being sent to forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad_s (bah-SHAHR ahl ah-SAHD) regime. Clinton warns that if the shipment goes ahead, the situation with rebels in the embattled nation could get quote dramatically worse.NO) The shipment could end any hopes of a peace agreement. Western countries had hoped that Russia and China would agree to a plan that would end the Assad regime. Russia and Syria have had a long-term military relationship - Syria is home to Russia_s only Mediterranean naval base. But get this, Moscow stresses that the helicopters aren_t meant to attack Syrian rebels.2. NO) The US is going to be significantly increasing its naval presence in the Asia-Pacific. In a policy unveiled by Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, 60-percent of the US Naval fleet will be sent to Pacific waters by 2020. This is part of a plan outlined by the Obama administration to beef up their presence in the region.PP) The administration feels that they need more presence in the Pacific based on Asian economic growth, and China_s rapid rise as a military force. Some of the Navy_s most advanced weaponry will be deployed including state of the art fighter planes and Submarines. 3.NO) On Wednesday one of the biggest changes will occur to the internet since its inception. It_s gTLD Reveal Day, a day when even more top-level domain names are revealed. You may know domains like dot-com and dot-net. But ICANN - the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers - received over 19-hundred applications for new ones - at 185-thousand dollars a popPP) For example, search giant Google has applied for dot-google, dot-youtube, and dot-lol. This could vastly expand the web and change the way people search and how companies brand themselves on-line. Right now, there are only 22 suffixes, and ICANN could reveal hundreds more. But critics say these new domains could provide a significant disadvantage or cost to some companies. And that_s your first look at the news.
