The Arizona and Michigan primaries are nearly upon us, meaning dozens more delegates are up for grabs in the Republican presidential campaign. Although four contenders remain, the pressure clearly lies on frontrunnersMitt Romney and Rick Santorum. Romney is projected to clinch Arizona, but any victory celebrations could be short lived. Reason being, if he loses his home state of Michigan, insiders believe the momentum will clearly swing in Santorum_s favour. We_ll have all the results and analysis from the Tuesday polls in our election segment called Power Play on Wednesday. It_s been nearly two years since the Deepwater Horizon disaster ravaged the Gulf of Mexico, leaving one of the world_s biggest oil spills in its wake. Now at long last, a settlement may be on the way. With more on this story we_ll go to Peyton Priestley. PP) Vic, although it_s far from a guarantee, there are some positive signs an agreement could be made soon. The biggest indicator comes from the Louisiana federal court where the long awaited trial on civil damages has been postponed 1 week so negotiations can continue. Both Haliburton and BP are among the defendants, with each having set aside billions of dollars for the potential settlement. If the case goes to trial, BP could pay up to 17 billion in civil penalties alone. PP) And over in Mexico, 22 Carnival Cruise Line passengers were robbed by bandits during a sightseeing tour in Puerto Vallarta PWAIR-toe vy-AR-tah. Although there were no reports of injuries, the unknown assailants made off with cash, valuables and passports. A Carnival spokesman says the passengers will be fully reimbursed as soon as possible. The news comes in the wake of a travel advisory from the US government warning against visiting all or parts of 14 Mexican states. Carnaval is no longer offering the jungle tour where the theft took place. Vic? VS) This has got to be the last thing the cruise ship industry wants to hear right now. PP) Or Mexico_s TOURISM board for that matter. Carnaval hasn_t cancelled stops in Puerto Vallarta just yet, but the public backlash could get them to reconsider. VS) No thanks to Pakistan who they_re STILL trying to secure safe passage from.ES) Officials can say thanks but NO THANKS now that they_ve struck a deal with three other central Asian nations that should help them get their equipment home safe and sound.VS) Here_s the latest.1. VS) US and NATO authorities have cut a deal with Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan for a secure access route on equipment headed to Europe. Pakistan_s roads, which had been used for the majority of the mission, have been closed since an accidental NATO airstrike on Pakistani forces a few months ago. The new northern exit route is less convenient, but also far less expensive.ES) The central Asian nations are charging a transport fee upwards of 12-hundred dollars per truck. That may sound pricey, but it pales in comparison to the outrageous 5-thousand dollars per truck being demanded by Pakistan - a price the US has refused to pay. The equipment will be shipped into Europe, and then flown home. The last of NATO_s troops will leave the region at the end of 2014.2. VS) Russian President Vladimir Putin visited Beijing on Tuesday with hopes of bolstering his country_s relations with China. Putin met with Chinese President Hu Jintao (jin-TOW) for discussions on a range of topics that will include energy cooperation and the volatile situation in Syria. Both Russia and China have been reluctant to interfere with the Assad regime_s crackdown on protesters.ES) Economic relations between the two have warmed considerably over the last decade. Bilateral trade hit 83-point-5 billion dollars last year, thanks mainly to partnership in the energy sector. The two nations have a goal of reaching 100 billion dollars in trade by 2015. The friendly efforts from Russia are thought to have something to do with the vast untapped resources in Siberia, and fears that China will look to gain control of the thinly populated region.3. VS) Four days of massive celebrations for Queen Elizabeth_s diamond jubilee came to a close on Tuesday, and the festivities were capped off in style After Monday_s fantastic concert that featured some of the biggest names in pop music, things took on a more formal tone on Tuesday.ES) The Queen led a parade through central London to Buckingham Palace, riding in a horse and carriage alongside Prince Charles and his wife Camilla. Welcome to Naked News, I_m Victoria Sinclair, this is what_s making headlines today.We_ve got more shocking information about James Holmes, the man accused of the movie theatre massacre in Aurora, Colorado. Police officials say that the suspect had allegedly rigged his small apartment with at least 30 home-made grenades and 10 gallons of gas. The bomb squad needed to remotely disarm the traps, which were apparently designed to go off when anyone entered. One official says the entire apartment building would have been engulfed in flames by the time fire trucks arrived. On the political front, the vitriolic ads on both sides of the US Presidential election are taking a clear toll on the candidates. According to a poll from NBC and the Wall Street Journal, both Mitt Romney and Barack Obama have seen their very negative ratings hit record highs. And Romney has a net rating of negative, which hasn_t happened with any other Republican candidate in recent history. Overall, Obama is inching ahead amongst registered voters n polling at a 6-percent lead over Romney, up 3-percent from last month. But the majority of those polled still say they think less of BOTH candidates after what they_ve seen and heard recently. Good luck, gentlemen. North of the border, Canada is experiencing it_s lowest crime rate since 1972. According to stats from 2011, there were just under 2 million crimes reported. That_s a drop, nationwide, of 6-percent, from the year before. Official numbers say that crime peaked in Canada in 1991, but has been decreasing ever since. Our top story today takes us to Italy where another devastating earthquake has struck the northern part of the country. NO) This is in the same area that was rocked by a similar earthquake just last week. Here_s the latest. 1. NO) At least 12 people have been killed by a 5-point-8 magnitude earthquake that struck the Emilia region of northern Italy. Rescue teams are scrambling to pull survivors out of the many collapsed buildings. The quake has left many historic buildings in ruins. EA) Making matters even worse is the fact that aftershocks continue to shake the region. There have been at least 40 of them since the quake struck early Tuesday. Apart from the toll on its people, the earthquake will likely also impact the country_s economy. Northern Italy is known as the heart of the nation_s manufacturing industry.2. NO) Unfortunately that_s not the only tragic news we have to report today. In Qatar (kah-TAR), a massive fire at a popular shopping mall in the country_s capital has claimed the lives of at least nineteen people. The exact cause of the blaze is unknown, but it_s believed to have started in the mall_s day care center.EA) The fire broke out at around 11 am local time. Firefighters who arrived on scene were unable to get to those trapped by the blaze in time. Some of the survivors have been critical of the rescue efforts, saying that emergency workers didn_t arrive on scene until long after the fire was underway. 3. NO) Turning now to the fallout from last week_s shocking execution-style violence in Syria. A number of Western states have condemned the incident, and are now responding by ousting Syrian diplomats from their borders. The UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, Spain and Italy have all asked Syrian officials to leave. EA) Meanwhile the UN has confirmed that over one hundred people were executed in the town of Houla last Friday by pro-government troops. Eyewitnesses say that soldiers went from house to house and opened fire on defenseless civilians. It was the most vicious round of violence since the uprising there began fourteen months ago. Syria_s government says it was not behind the attacks, and blames the incident on terrorist groups. And that_s your first look at the news. VS) Welcome to Naked News, Iim VS. Hereis whatis making news today. At least 78 people are dead in yet another apparent massacre in Syria. Troops and militia loyal to President Bashar al-Assad (bah-SHAHR ahl AH-sahd) are accused of the killings in a central Syrian village near Hama (hah-MAH). Itis believed that over half of the victims are women and children. Officials call the claims ìcompletely falsei, and say troops intervened after a ìterroristi group targeted innocent civilians. The alleged massacre happened just before the UN Security Council was scheduled to convene to review the Syrian situation. In the 15 months since the uprising began, 13-thousand lives have been lost.Federal agents in Puerto Rico have arrested DOZENS of people suspected of smuggling drugs into the US. 2 drug rings in particular thought to be responsible, were at the center of the busts. Eila Adams has been watching this developing story and joins us now with the latest. EA) Vic, 36 people in all were arrested including airline workers and baggage handlers at San Juanis international airport. They_re all accused being part of 2 criminal organizations that were responsible for smuggling huge amounts of drugs into the US via commercial aircraft. Itis believed that one of the drug rings has been using San Juanis airport for over a decade. 45 people were indicted including a dozen current and former employees of American Airlines. The DEA claims that over 61 thousand pounds of cocaine was smuggled through Puerto Rico and into the US since 1999. And former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak (HOHS-nee moo-BAH-rahk) is in intensive care after his health took a turn for the worse. He was reportedly placed on a ventilator several times while in the ICU. He was taken to a prison hospital Saturday after being receiving a life sentence for his role in the deaths of pro-democracy demonstrators last year. The state-run news organization MENA says that officials are suggesting that he be moved to either a military or private hospital. It doesn_t look good for him VicVS) I guess facing a life behind bars will do that to people Eila.EA) No doubt, and it gets even worse. The headlines And most notably, a major development from the Republican campaign trail in the US. It_s now official - Newt Gingrich will be dropping out of the race for the White House. And yes, Mr. Gingrich is expected to wave the white flag in a formal announcement next Tuesday. The fact that he lasted as long as he did in the Republican battle is a surprise to most pundits. But it wasn_t without a steep price. The Gingrich campaign is now 4-point-3 million dollars in debt. His campaign scored a big victory early on with a win in South Carolina. But he failed to win other Southern states and it became increasingly obvious that he couldn_t challenge Mitt Romney_s candidacy. Whether he_ll choose to throw his support behind Romney_s White House bid remains unknown.Elsewhere in the US, Connecticut has become the fifth state in as many years to choose life over death. On Wednesday, Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy signed new legislation that abolishes capital punishment. The new law will take effect immediately. That means the maximum sentence in state trials will be life in prison. However, the law isn_t retroactive, and won_t change circumstances for prisoners already facing the death penalty. Connecticut is the seventeenth state in the US to abandon capital punishment. Side, long There are shocking allegations out of Los Angeles international airport. 4 security screeners have been arrested on drug trafficking and bribery charges. According to a prosecutor, the Transportation Security Administration staffers - both past and present - accepted 22 payments of up to 24-hundred dollars each in order to allow large shipments of cocaine, pot, and meth through x-ray screening machines. Some of the shipments weighed up to 44 pounds. This is being described as a significant breakdown of the screening system. EIla, along with the TSA employees, several other people have been charged as being drug mules. EA) This is a huge black eye for an organization that_s not exactly popular to begin with, isn_t it?VS) It sure is. They_re patting down and strip-searching elderly women, but for a few dollars they_ll help you smuggle all the drugs you want.EA) (shakes head) This is the last thing they needed, PR-wise.
