And the NYPD has announced it will start ticketing people for marijuana rather than arresting them. The official change to the policy will begin November 19th. From then on people caught carrying under 25 grams of marijuana will be given summons rather than handcuffed and taken to the station. Between 1996 and 2011 an average of nearly 37000 people were arrested for small amounts of pot. Police Commissioner Bill Bratton says marijuana is still illegal but arresting citizens for possession of small amounts does not merit the Department_s time and resources.
