But there IS some light at the end of the tunnel for the millions of people affected. Here_s senior anchor Victoria Sinclair to tell us more. Vic?Marina, some businesses are expected to re-open on Wednesday as the region continues to count the cost of the super storm. One of those businesses is the New York Stock Exchange. It was closed for 2 consecutive days, marking the first time that_s happened since 1888. JFK and Newark airports are set to re-open as well, all be it for limited service.LaGuardia remains closed because it_s runways are still submerged under water. It_ll still take a few days before the New York Subway system is re-opened and millions of people across the northeast might have to wait a little longer for their power to be restored. The estimated cost of cleanup has ballooned to between 30 or 40 billion dollars.One of the worst hit areas was New Jersey. But as they struggle to recover, their governor has found what some people think is an unlikely ally. Katherine Curtis has the story.Vic, New Jersey_s bombastic governor Chris Christie has his plate full dealing with the after-effects of Sandy. He_s set to tour disaster areas with President Barack Obama. Christie, who_s a very vocal supporter of Mitt Romney, has had nothing but enthusiastic praise of the President over his handling of the disaster, calling his support wonderful. But the state has a lot of work ahead of it. Christie called the devastation unthinkable, while Newark mayor Cory Booker warned that they were going to have a quote challenging time ahead. Back to the President Kat, I understand that Christie and Obama pretty much ignored the fact that there_s an election coming up in a week.That_s right - in Christie_s own words, quote, ...not once did he (the president) bring up the election... If he_s not bringing it up, I_m certainly not going to bring it up.I guess that would make for an awkward conversation. Keep us updated Kat and thanks for the report. The effects of Hurricane Sandy are being felt elsewhere throughout the political arena. Though the election is just days away, the storm has dominated the lion_s share of media coverage. It_s also derailed several campaign stops for both Mitt Romney and President Obama, with Romney converting one rally into a storm relief event. To further complicate matters, Sandy has thrown a wrench into Florida_s early voting process, which could lead to a decrease in voter turnout along the eastern seaboard. According to Pyongyang, they_ve sentenced an American citizen to 15 years in a hard labour camp. It_s a move many view as a direct challenge to Washington. Erica Stevens has more on this story.ES) Kat, the man in question is 44-year old Pae Jun-ho (PAY JOON HO), or Kenneth Bae as he was known in the US. He was arrested last November during a trip to a special trade zone near North Korea_s northeast border with China. Pyongyang has charged him with anti-government crimes, and according to state-run media, Pae confessed to trying to overthrow the government. ES) In Saudi Arabia, five are dead and two others seriously ill from what health officials are calling a Sars-like virus. They say the bug causes pneumonia and kidney failure, and is from the same family as the infamous virus that erupted in Asia in 2003. The Saudi health ministry says it_s taking all necessary precautions, and have begun testing others who may be infected.ES) Fortunately Kat, the threat to the general population is believed to be pretty small.KC) Let_s hope so. Both the U.S. and Britain say theyive found ìlimited but persuasivei evidence the deadly nerve gas sarin SAIR-in has been deployed in the two-year conflict. Turkish authorities stress their findings will only confirm whether toxic chemicals are present, and likely wonit determine whether government or rebel forces deployed them.PP) Keeping with Syria, a new poll has found that most Americans are against intervening in the countryis civil war. The vote: an overwhelmingly non-partisan 94 to 3. Kerry will now tender his resignation as Massachusetts senator, a position heis held for nearly thirty years.Ray LaHood is stepping down as U.S. Transportation Secretary. The former Republican congressman from Illinois says he was conflicted when making the decision, calling his time with the Obama administration quote ìthe best job Iive ever had in public service.i During his tenure, LaHood pushed through several initiatives, including higher fuel efficiency standards and improved airline safety. And a military veteran from Staten Island met the press for the first time after undergoing a remarkable DOUBLE ARM transplant. 26-year-old Brendan Marrocco was able to meet reporters at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, pushing his wheelchair under his own power.

Among other things, the 39-page document criticizes the State Department for having a security plan that was quote, grossly inadequate to deal with the attack that took place. With more, here_s Katherine Curtis. Marina, the review board says security lapses at the embassy in Libya stemmed from a number of critical issues. These include a lack of resources, management deficiencies, as well as insufficient transparency and responsiveness at the senior level. Most damning may be the revelation that requests for additional staff at the consulate had been repeatedly denied. Despite the condemnation, panel members have concluded no government employee skirted responsibilities or engaged in any form of professional misconduct. Because of this, disciplinary actions are unlikely. Outgoing Secretary of State Hillary Clinton appears to have taken the report very seriously Marina, pledging to ensure all 24 recommendations are implemented right away. So is there any word on what_s going to change going forward, Kat? Clinton says that in addition to boosting intelligence in high-risk areas, the State Department will work to dramatically increase security as well. She_s also looking to create a new office devoted entirely to high-threat postings.Sounds like a positive step forward. Thanks for the update, Kat. And now with a look at what else is making headlines, here_s Peyton Priestley with a Naked News bulletins. Marina, several days after the shootings in Newtown Connecticut, the National Rifle Association has finally broken its silence. In addition to saying it_s shocked, saddened, and heartbroken by the tragedy, the group issued a statement offering, quote, meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again. A news conference is slated for Friday. House Democrats say they_re already pushing for legislation that would ban the manufacturing of high-capacity magazines. The proposed law would make it illegal to transfer, import, or possess magazines containing more than ten rounds of ammunition. According to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, there should already be enough votes to take the bill directly to the Senate. And Instagram has done a major about-face on its newly-released terms of service. This comes a mere day after users cried foul over a clause that could potentially allow the company to sell their personal photos to advertisers. A rep for the popular site says the terms will now be re-written, to ensure all images remain the sole property of members who upload them. And that_s your first look at the news.
