Well hello, and welcome to Naked News, I_m Victoria Sinclair.Congolese warlord Thomas Lubanga has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for war crimes. He was convicted in March of recruiting, conscripting, and using child soldiers as part of his militia in 2002 and 2003 during bloody conflicts in the Eastern Congo. Prosecutors had been asking for a 30-year sentence for the 51-year-old warlord, but had said they_d settle for 20 if he offered a, quote, genuine apology.With pre-trial custody factored in, Lubanga will only spend another 8 years in prison. While he was actually given 3 sentences of between 12 and 14 years, he_ll serve them concurrently. Lubanga showed no emotion as the sentencing was handed down. Infighting between President Mohammed Morsi and the military may be putting Egypt_s democratic transition at risk. The newly-elected leader is locked in conflict with the nation_s powerful armed forces over whether the legislature should reconvene.A recent Supreme Court ruling helped bring Morsi into power on condition that the Egyptian parliament, which was dominated by his Muslim Brotherhood Party, be dissolved. The standoff caps nearly a year and a half of political strife that eventually resulted in the ousting of longtime leader Hosni Bubarak.Finance ministers in the Eurozone have agreed to let Spain borrow 37-billion dollars to help bail out their troubled banks. This would be the first installment of an earlier bailout agreement of up to 120-billion dollars that they_d already agreed upon last month. It_s not a done deal just yet though. The ministers have to get approval from their individual governments first. It_s still unknown exactly how much will be needed to rescue the Spanish banks. The ministers also agreed to extend a deadline for Spain to slash its budget deficit from 2013 to 2014. EA) An amazing collection of comic books recently sold for 3 and a half million dollars at auction in New York City. The collection belonged to the late Billy Wright of Virginia. One of his relatives was going through his belongings when they stumbled upon a stack of 345 comics in his basement. RW) And WHAT a find indeed Amongst them was an Action Comics number one from 1938, featuring the very first appearance of Superman. That one sold for 299-thousand. Wright also had Detective Comics number twenty-seven - AKA the first appearance of Batman That comic sold for 523-thousand dollars. And there_s your proof that comic book collecting is more than just a hobby - it_s an investment 2. EA) Is your iPhone_s FaceTime feature having a negative impact on your self-esteem? According to Washington DC-based plastic surgeon, Doctor Robert Sigal (SEE-gull) it most certainly is. He says he_s seen a major rise in patients seeking facelift surgery because they don_t like how they look when they use the video chat feature of their phones. RW) He_s calling it the Facetime Facelift effect. Sigal (SEE-gull) specializes in cosmetic procedures that_ll help keep you looking your best during video chats. EA) Now for an epic story of TINY proportions The Guinness Book of World Records has just confirmed a 72-year old Nepalese man as the shortest person EVER recorded Chandra Bahadur Dangi (CHAN-dra ba-ha-DOOR DAHN-gee) is just 21 and a half inches tall So why_d it take so long for him to be discovered?RW) Probably because Dangi is from a remote mountain village in Nepal, 250 miles west of Katmandu. A contractor noticed him in the village and brought the story to local media. He has five average-size brothers and no one in his family really remembers exactly when he stopped growing. So, using similar technology, we created Erica Stevens 2.0 EA) Yep, she_s a hologram, and unlike the original _Human Erica,_ she possesses 32% higher news-reading efficiency, 17% more nudity, and 61% fewer off-camera tantrums. In case you haven_t been watching the news these past few days, here_s how things have been going... Erica 2.0 is in the middle of the sports segment. She_s slightly transparent (although barely), and there_s a tinge of a metallic filter over her voice as she speaks. ERICA: Hello there, human viewers. Welcome to... Sports. I_m Erica Stevens 2.0. Let_s start overseas, where England_s football league is introducing new spending caps for the three divisions below the Premier League. And for many teams, this is expected to be ANYTHING but a ball. On the word _but,_ a ball is tossed for Erica to catch. She attempts to do so, but the ball passes straight through her (done with some easy studio trickery). Erica stares straight ahead. B-roll of Japanese news anchor. As heshe speaks in Japanese, subtitles read: Will this hologram anchor bring honour back to the centuries-old tradition of nude newscasting?B-roll of Al-Jazeera news anchor. Which begs the question: are the Holo-Anchor_s days numbered?Whoopsie It looks like the REAL Erica Stevens has a few choice words for her former Naked News honchos. And according to this phone call, something something something, annoying pun, exclamation mark ERICA Oh, hi there, dickheads. So, yeah. A fucking ERICA HOLOGRAM? ... VS) I_m Victoria Sinclair and you_re inside the naked newsroom.We begin today in the US where President Barack Obama_s administration has blocked a divisive (dih-VY-siv) new law in Texas that would require voters to present identification before going to the polls. The bill_s supporters say it would help cut down on voter fraud. However the US Justice Department says the law would discriminate against Hispanics and other minorities. The department also added that there is little to no evidence of any wrongdoing at the polls. There is precedent for this type of action. The federal government stopped a similar law from passing in South Carolina last December. Turning out attention to the Middle East now, where four days of deadly clashes between Israeli forces and militant groups in the Gaza strip have finally come to a halt. The two sides have agreed to a truce - at least for now. With the latest we_ll turn things over to Rachelle Wilde.RW) Vic an Egypt-brokered ceasefire has been agreed to, and there haven_t been any rocket or airstrike attacks since very early Tuesday morning. The truce came after calls from the US, the EU, and the United Nations for both sides to show some restraint. At least 25 Palestinians were killed and 35 Israelis injured in the attacks. Though Israel officials say that number would have been far higher if not for their impressive new Iron Dome missile-defense system, which they say intercepted 50 rockets. RW) In other news, six more arrests have been made in the UK in connection to the News International phone hacking scandal. The suspects, including former chief executive Rebekah Brooks, are being held on charges of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice. It_s the second time Brooks has been detained in the police probe, dubbed Operation Weeting. She was arrested last July on suspicion of intercepting communications, and was released on bail. Brooks_ husband Charlie was also among the six brought in for questioning Vic. VS) So the charge is conspiracy to pervert the course of justice. (smile) Mind telling us what that means exactly?RW) (laughs) It_s really just a fancy way of saying that police could be looking at a possible coverup of the scope of the phone hacking.VS) Ah, so the plot thickens for Mrs. Brooks And what about her husband?RW) His role here isn_t clear just yet. He_s a prominent horse breeder who writes for the Daily Telegraph. Archaeologists have uncovered the find of a lifetime in northern Bulgaria An ancient tiara with intricate animal motifs, a golden horse headpiece, a gold ring, and 100 golden buttons were all part of the stunning haul. Experts say the priceless artifacts are over two thousand years old. The discovery was made during a dig at the biggest of 150 Thracian (THRAY-shun) tombs. And for you history buffs out there, the tomb is believed to belong to the father-in-law of Phillip the Second of Macedon, who was the father of Alexander the Great.50 years ago this month, Kuwait became the first Arab state in the Gulf to draft a constitution and form a parliament. And to celebrate the Golden Jubilee, the oil rich nation put on a record-breaking fireworks display. Kuwait spent over 20 million dollars on nearly 80-thousand fireworks that were all launched in an hour.
